SEC weekly honors earned by Tai Brown, Apalos Edwards
BIRMINGHAM – Performances at the Arkansas Qualifier earned a pair of Razorbacks SEC weekly honors with Tai Brown being named Runner of the Week and Apalos Edwards earning Field Athlete of the Week.
Brown continued his improvement in the 60m hurdles, setting a career best of 7.72 in the prelims after clocking 7.74 twice during the Tyson Invitational. In the final, Brown escalated to another level with a 7.63 victory.
The 7.63 ranks No. 3 on the UA all-time list, trailing only the school record of 7.45 by Omar McLeod and a 7.54 by Phillip Lemonious. Brown’s time was also the fastest time among collegians for the weekend and he currently ranks equal sixth on the season after being in the 30s with his 7.74.
Edwards made his debut as a Razorback in finishing as the top collegian in the triple jump with a mark of 52-0.5 (15.86) and placed third overall. The effort was second best among collegians on the weekend and ranks fourth best in the SEC.
In the triple jump competition at the Arkansas Qualifier, Edwards finished behind a pair of professional jumpers in Bermuda’s Jah-Nhai Perinchief (53-8.25|16.36) and the Bahamas Kaiwan Culmer (53-4.25|16.26).
With the SEC Indoor Championships next up for the host Razorbacks, Brown and Edwards bring previous conference experience while competing at other schools.
While at Kentucky, Brown finished sixth in the 60m hurdles with a 7.84 at the 2021 SEC Indoor and also finished sixth in 2020 with a 7.90 after a 7.81 prelim. At SEC Outdoor, Brown finished fourth in the 110m hurdles with a 13.68 in 2019 and placed seventh in 2021 with a 13.57w.
Competing at LSU, Edwards claimed a bronze medal in the 2023 SEC Indoor held in the Tyson Center with a career best leap of 55-3 (16.84). In 2022, Edwards scored in both the long jump (24-8.25|7.52) and triple jump (52-10.75|16.12), placing fifth in the triple and seventh in the long jump.
Outdoors, Edwards collected a silver medal at the 2022 SEC meet with a 53-3.5 (16.24) performance.
