Smith, Ewertz Lead No. 13 Arkansas to Big Win at No. 11 BYU
PROVO, Utah – Arkansas sophomore goalkeeper Keegan Smith made nine saves and sophomore forward/defender Kyndal Ewertz scored the game-winning goal with nine minutes left to shut out previously unbeaten No. 11 BYU (3-1-1), 1-0, on Tuesday night in Provo.
Smith tied her career high in saves and picked up her 13th career shutout. Ewertz became the Hogs’ first multi-goal scorer this season.
Arkansas (2-2-1) dominated possession to start the match, and its first real chance came from forward Bella Field nine minutes in.
Things got sloppy in the final 30 minutes of the half, with the Razorbacks giving up four free kicks around the 18-yard box. BYU failed to convert on each attempt but outshot Arkansas 9-6 in the first half. Smith had three saves by the half.
The Cougars pressured Smith again in the second half and forced her to make several highlight-reel stops. Arkansas struggled to maintain possession but got off-target shots from Field and Kennedy Ball.
The Razorbacks won just four corner kicks in the match, but the final one in the 81st minute, taken by Ball, found the head of Ewertz at the top of the 6-yard box.
The goal was Arkansas’ seventh of the year and first via a corner kick.
BYU outshot the Hogs 21-16 and finished ahead in corner kicks 5-4.
Prior to tonight’s win, the Razorbacks were 0-2-1 against ranked competition this season. Colby Hale improved to 3-0-1 all-time against the Cougars.
