Softball faces Northern Colorado in home opener

FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas softball team faces Northern Colorado in its home opener Thursday at 3:00 p.m. at Lady’Back Yard. The Lady Razorbacks stay in town all weekend, hosting the Clarion Inn-Arkansas Invitational Friday through Sunday.

The Lady’Backs are off to the best start in program history and enter Thursday’s game 10-2. The Bears come to Fayetteville with a record of 2-9 after losing a doubleheader against Loyola Marymount on Monday.

“It will be a great field to open the home season with,” said head coach Jamie Pinkerton. “The ladies are ready to play at home and hopefully the weather will cooperate.”

After the Lady’Backs play the Bears Thursday, Northern Colorado stays for the Clarion Inn-Arkansas Invitational beginning Friday. Arkansas also welcomes Alcorn State, Creighton and Saint Louis for the three-day tournament.

Northern Colorado head coach, Jennifer Schunke, formerly Cirigliano, is familiar with Lady’Back Yard, playing for Arkansas from 1997-2000. She holds numerous records from her four-year career.

The Lady’Backs lead the Southeastern Conference with 13 home runs. Sophomores Miranda Dixon and Sandra Smith have a league-high four home runs each.

Sophomore Jessica Bachkora was named to the Preseason All-SEC Second Team, the league announced today. Bachkora was one of just 25 SEC softball players chosen to receive the honor. League coaches voted on the preseason teams to highlight another upcoming season of SEC softball.
