Stanford Invitational opens outdoor campaign for Razorback distance squad
STANFORD, Calif. – Arkansas’ distance group opens the outdoor season at the 2022 Stanford Invitational held at Cobb Track and Angell Field this Friday, April 1, as the Razorbacks compete in distances from 1,500m to the 10,000m.
The Razorbacks will have four racing at the 10,000m distance with Emmanuel Cheboson, Patrick Kiprop, Jacob McLeod, and Myles Richter. Competing in the 5,000m are Amon Kemboi and Josh Shearer.
Carter Persyn takes on the 3,000m steeplechase while the 1,500m includes Luke George, Andrew Kibet, Tommy Romanow, and Elias Schreml.
“We’ve got our guys spread out between the 10, 5, and 15,” noted Arkansas men’s head coach Chris Bucknam. “We’ll try to get a benchmark to see where we’re at. Hopefully, we will get some 10k qualifiers and maybe a 5k qualifier.
“We’re going to run Amon Kemboi in the 5k and not the 10k this weekend, mainly because of his heavy load in the last couple of weeks during the indoor season.”
With a crew of a dozen individuals, Arkansas will face some early season competition in those events from Air Force, Alabama, Arizona State, Boise State, BYU, California, Cal Poly, Colorado, Colorado State, Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, Northern Arizona, North Dakota, Oklahoma State, Portland, San Jose State, Santa Clara, Southern Utah, Syracuse, Tulsa, UC Davis, UCLA, Utah State, Washington State, and Wisconsin.

“The outdoor season is a process, and it takes a little bit of time,” said Bucknam. “We’ll take one meet at a time and get as much accomplished as we can.
“The weather should be perfect for distance running. It just gives you that guarantee when you’re racing over that many laps.”
The 5,000m Invite, scheduled for 8:30 p.m. (PT), will include Kemboi while the 10,000m Invite, scheduled for 9:27 p.m., will include Cheboson, Kiprop, McLeod, and Richter.
Earlier races will have Persyn in the second heat of the 3,000m steeplechase at 5:48 p.m., followed by George and Romanow in the third heat of the 1,500m at 6:32 p.m. In the first heat of the 1,500m at 6:44 p.m. will be Kibet and Schreml. The second heat of the 5,000m at 7:53 p.m. will include J. Shearer.
