Successful surgery for Mallett

TEXARKANA, Ark. — Razorback sophomore quarterback Ryan Mallett underwent surgery late yesterday to address his broken left foot, University of Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino said tonight.

By coincidence, Petrino was in Texarkana, Mallett’s hometown, to speak to the local Razorback Club.

Petrino told local media and club members that Mallett had successful surgery on the foot, which will result in him being off his feet for the next month. The course of his recovery will include the next month in an immobilizing boot, followed by one to two additional months of limited activity.

Petrino announced the injury yesterday when it occurred in the course of the team’s off-season conditioning drills on Wednesday morning. Mallett hurt his foot during a change of direction drill, and continued on for a while before the pain was such that he stepped out of drills.

The record-setting Razorback quarterback will miss the 2010 spring drills and 2010 Razorback spring football game, scheduled for April 24.
