
Weaver equals high jump best to win event in Mt. SAC decathlon
WALNUT, Calif. – Razorback Marcus Weaver equaled his career best in the high jump during the Invitational decathlon at the 65th Mt. SAC Relays on Wednesday and is currently in seventh place with a first day score of 4,028 points.
Weaver cleared 6-9.5 (2.07) to claim the high jump portion of the combined events, scoring 868 points. The performance moved Weaver from ninth to fifth in overall scoring with 3,235 points at that stage.
An impressive run of first attempt makes had Weaver clearing the first four bars from 6-2.25 (1.89) to 6-6 (1.98). He needed three attempts to clear 6-7 (2.01), to attempts at 6-8.25 (2.04) and then a third attempt to better the field at 6-9.5.
Finishing day one with the 400m, Weaver posted a time of 50.48 for 793 points and dropped to seventh overall.
Leaders through the first day of the decathlon have Hakim Morris at 4,351 points with Austin West at 4,335 and Kendrick Thompson at 4,197.
Weaver was second best in the shot put with a mark of 48-0.75 (14.65) for 768 points. He started the decathlon with an 11.17 in the 100m (823) and then had a 22-5.25w (6.84) long jump for 776 points with an aiding wind of 2.7 mps.
On Thursday, the decathlon continues with five more events – 100m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and 1,500m.
The B division of the Invitational decathlon included a pair of Razorbacks in Jaxon Bair and Cale Kassen, but neither finished the first day due to injury.
Bair posted a time of 10.74 (919 points) to place third in the 100m while Kassen clocked 10.97 (867). Kassen was second best overall in the long jump with a leap of 23-1.25 (7.04) for 823 points while Bair reached a distance of 22-7 (6.88) for 785 points.
Kassen hit a mark of 42-2.25 (12.86) in the shot put for 659 points, which had him fourth overall with 2,349 points. Bair was unable to contest the shot put due to an injury during the long jump.
A high jump of 6-3.5 (1.92) earned Kassen 731 points and moved his overall total to 3,080 points, but an injury prevented him from completing the first day with the 400m.
