Werner Tops SEC Freshman Runners
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Following her spectacular collegiate debut at the Riverside Invitational last weekend in California, Arkansas freshman Taylor Werner has been selected as the SEC Freshman Runner of the Week.
The award is the first of Werner’s career as a Razorback.
Kicking off her season in the Riverside 5K, Werner put on a show for spectators, displaying tremendous speed and endurance for a young runner.
The Missouri native powered through the Ags/Ops course, controlling the race through its entirety before crossing the finish line in 16 minutes, 48.52 seconds to capture a meet title in the first race of her college career. Werner was the only performer at the meet to record a sub-17 minute performance which earned her a spot on Arkansas’ all-time best top 20 5K list.
Her performance also secured Arkansas’ third team title of the 2016 season.
The young standout will next compete on her home course of Agri Park when the Razorbacks host the 28th Annual Chile Pepper Festival on Saturday, Oct. 1.
