Arkansas Suffers First Loss of Season

LUBBOCK, Texas – Arkansas women’s basketball (4-1) dropped its first game of the Kelsi Musick era on the road against Texas Tech (5-0), 80-62.

The Hogs were plagued by another slow start but battled in the second half and outscored the Lady Raiders 41-37.

First Quarter – 21-13

  • Arkansas controlled the tip but Maria Rodriguez traveled on the opening possession, the first of the Hogs’ nine turnovers in the opening 10 minutes.
  • Texas Tech’s Denae Fritz scored the first points of the game, a three-pointer at the 8:26 mark.
  • Rodriguez picked up two fouls nearly three minutes into the game.
  • Taleyah Jones got a steal that turned into a deep three-pointer for Emily Robinson for the Hogs’ first points of the game.
  • Jones tied the game at 5-5 on the next possession.
  • The Lady Raiders led 10-5 at the media timeout.
  • Arkansas had a stretch of 0-6 from the field until Harmonie Ware hit a short jumper at the 1:53 mark.
  • Texas Tech led by 10 points but two free throws from Robinson cut its lead to 8 at the end of the first quarter.
  • The Razorbacks shot 21% (3-14) from the field compared to Tech’s 41% (7-17)
  • Both teams were perfect from the free-throw line in the first quarter.

Second Quarter – 27-43

  • Wyvette Mayberry made her Arkansas debut and scored her first of four points early in the second.
  • Ashlynn Chlarson and Jones hit threes to keep the Hogs in the game.
  • Texas Tech improved its field goal shooting percentage by nearly 18 points and shot 58.8% (10-17) in the second quarter to push its lead to 21 points late in the second half, the Razorbacks’ largest deficit of the season.
  • Arkansas trailed 43-27 at half.

Third Quarter – 50-61

  • Texas Tech opened the quarter with a three to extend its lead to 19.
  • The Hogs were scoreless in the quarter until Jenna Lawrence hit a three at the 7:20 mark.
  • Arkansas hit three straight field goals to cut Tech’s lead to 16. The Raiders were 1 for their last 8 from the field going into the media timeout.
  • The Razorbacks went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 12 before Texas Tech answered with back-to-back layups on the other end.
  • Jones hit her second three-pointer of the game to cut it to 11 points and an and-one for Robinson cut it to 8.
  • Arkansas closed the quarter 5 of its last 7 from the field.
  • Tech had its worst shooting performance of the night in the third quarter, 37.5%.

Fourth Quarter – 62-80

  • Jones opened the quarter with a layup to get it back to single digits.
  • Deas picked up an and-1 and converted at the line to cut it to 8 points with 5:54 to play.
  • The Hogs trailed by 9 points at the final media timeout.
  • Tech’s Gemma Nunez hit a dagger three to put the home team up 11 with 1:19 to play.

Game Notes

  • Ashlynn Chlarson picked up her first start at Arkansas.
  • Wyvette Mayberry made her Razorback debut after missing the first four games. Mayberry played nearly 12 minutes with four points, an assist and a steal.
  • The Razorbacks allowed 43 points in the first half, the most given up in a half this season.
  • The game was tied for the first 1:50 and Arkansas never led.
