Women’s Tennis Doubles Advance in First Day of ITA Regional
STILLWATER, Okla. – The Arkansas women’s tennis team kicked off the ITA Central Regional Championship with doubles main draw action and qualifying play in singles and doubles competition on Thursday.
In the doubles main draw, the Razorback duo of Lenka Stara and Grace O’Donnell started the tournament out strong with a 8-2 win over Grammatikaki/Morini of Oral Roberts. The freshman duo of Yuhan Liu and Carolina Gomez-Alonso played a dominant first match, blanking their opponents 8-0 to advance to the second round tomorrow morning.
In qualifying singles play, Whitney Robbins faced South Dakota’s Weinberg in the first round falling 1-0, 0-6 to move into the consolation draw. Robbins will face Kansas City’s Laura Baroja at 11 a.m. CT tomorrow to continue play in the singles consolation bracket.
Freshman Morgan McCarthy was looking for her first singles win as a Razorback, facing Mary Houston of Missouri State in the first round of the singles qualifying draw. McCarthy took a demanding first set 6-1 and came out on top in the second set tiebreaker 7-6(8). Moving into the second round, McCarthy faced a challenging test in Grace Chadick of South Dakota. She fell in a tough three set match, 1-6, 6-2, 3-10.
The Razorbacks continue play at the ITA Regionals as they begin competition in the main draw of both singles Arkansas will have six players on the courts tomorrow: Kelly Keller, Grace O’Donnell, Indianna Spink, Yuhan Liu, Carolina Gomez-Alonso and Lenka Stara.
