Zavala Grabs First Razorback Win at ITF Event, Rain Pushes Play Indoors
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Monday morning kicked off Fayetteville’s second ITF tournament of the fall season, and five Razorbacks were in action in the first round of the qualifiers.
Arkansas sophomore Avery Zavala advanced to the second round of the qualifiers after beating the No. 11 seed Raphael Lambling, 4-6, 6-1, (10-8). Lambling, who plays for South Carolina, is ranked No. 1556 in the ATP rankings.
The rains came just after the Zavala match finished, forcing play to move indoors. Razorbacks Josh Bortnick, Jake Sweeney and Foster Rogers all fell in straight sets on the indoor courts while Hunter Harrison pushed No. 12 seed Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi to three sets but ultimately fell, 6-2, 2-6, (8-10).
The second round of the qualifiers kicks off Tuesday. Zavala will face the No. 2 seed Charles Broom for a chance at a spot in the main draw.
