Arkansas Closes Non-Conference Play with Loss to Arkansas State

FAYETTEVILLE – Arkansas women’s basketball (11-4) snapped its four-game win streak in the non-conference finale against Arkansas State (11-3), 81-72, on Sunday afternoon in Bud Walton Arena.

The Red Wolves capitalized on takeaways and scored 33 points off the Hogs’ 29 turnovers.

First Quarter – 16-21

  • The Red Wolves won the tip and scored on their first possession through Wynter Rogers
  • Emily Robinson responded with a three-pointer to give the Hogs their first lead of the game.
  • Arkansas State attempted 13 of its 46 threes in the first quarter.
  • Arkansas led 9-7 at the media timeout.
  • The Hogs struggled against the Red Wolves’ press and turned the ball over eight times to open the game.

Second Quarter – 33-43

  • Jenna Lawrence hit a three-pointer out of the break to make it 19-21.
  • Arkansas State went on a 7-0 run after the three-pointer and the Razorbacks called a timeout.
  • Mayberry ended Arkansas’ nearly four-minute scoring drought with a layup at the 6:06 mark.
  • Jones ended the Red Wolves’ 17-2 extended run with five straight points to cut Arkansas State’s lead to 12 with 3:00 to play in the half.
  • Deas led the Hogs on an 8-0 run and got it back to single digits.
  • Ware extended the run with a layup to cut it to seven points, but Rogers responded with her own layup.
  • The Hogs committed two 10-second violations in the first half.

Third Quarter – 53-65

  • The Hogs trailed 41-55 at the media timeout.
  • Arkansas went on an 8-0 run and trailed by eight points, but Arkansas State hit back-to-back threes from Mia Tarver and Marlie Dickerson to open it back up.
  • The Razorbacks finished the quarter making five of their last six from the field.

Fourth Quarter – 72-81

  • 59-73 at media
  • Arkansas State grabbed its biggest lead, 19 points, with five minutes left in the game.
  • Arkansas ended the game on a 12-2 run to cut the Red Wolves’ lead to single digits.
  • The Hogs outscored Arkansas State 19-17 in the fourth, the only quarter Arkansas won on the day.

Game Notes

  • Lawrence finished one rebound short of her second straight double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.
  • Arkansas was led by Taleyah Jones (18 points) for the eighth time this season.
  • The Red Wolves were 0-5 against the Razorbacks in Fayetteville before today’s game.
  • Mia Tarver matched Jones with 18 points to lead Arkansas State.
  • Five Razorbacks finished in double figures: Jones (18), Ware (15), Lawrence (12), Deas (12 rebounds) and Mayberry (11).
  • Arkansas State extended its win streak to nine games.
