Arkansas Finishes Seventh at SEC Championships
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Arkansas gymnastics team traveled to Huntsville, Ala. for the 2021 SEC Gymnastics Championships and walked away with a seventh-place finish and a team score of 195.600. Senior Sophia Carter took home a share of the floor title, tying for second with a 9.950. She helped Arkansas to a 49.425 in the event, good for third among all teams.
Starting the night on beam, the Gymback lineup was highlighted by a strong leadoff routine from sophomore Kiara Gianfagna and a clean routine from senior Sophia Carter in the number five spot. Gianfagna stuck her round-off 1.5 dismount and scored a 9.825 while Carter nailed her back-handspring layout and side ariel back-full dismount for a solid 9.850.
Arkansas turned a new page in the second rotation as Abby Johnston’s leadoff floor routine, complete with a beautiful double-pike first pass, scored a 9.850. Including Johnston’s. All five countable scores for Arkansas scored 9.850 or higher, leading to a 49.425 team score.
Redshirt-sophomore Bailey Lovett scored a 9.900 for the Gymbacks, showing off her double-layout first pass and front-layout front-full second pass. Carter stepped up for Arkansas and in the number three spot, performing a magnificent 9.950 routine, sticking her double-pike last pass to close out the all-around clean routine.
On vault, all six Gymbacks landed their vaults with Johnston once again highlighting the Arkansas lineup. She wonderfully executed her Yurchenko full and scored a 9.850 from the judges. In the anchor spot, Kennedy Hambrick showed off her Yurchenko 1.5 en route to a strong score of 9.875.
Swinging into the final rotation on bars, the Gymbacks looked to finish strong. Freshman Jensen Scalzo and senior Sarah Shaffer scored back-to-back 9.850s mid-way through the lineup as Arkansas closed out the night with a 48.175 on bars.
