Bogey-Free Rounds from José Marin and Zibilski Earn them Top 10 Finishes at Carmel Cup
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Arkansas women’s golfers Maria José Marin and Reagan Zibilski fired bogey-free rounds in the 60s in Sunday’s final round of the Carmel Cup. As a team, the Hogs finished in fourth at 19-over par.
José Marin (-6, 4th) was 1-under on the front nine before birdieing holes 11, 12, 15, 16 and 18 and surging to second place on the leaderboard of 48 players. The junior was poised to finish runner-up at the Carmel Cup for the third straight year until Texas A&M’s Cayetana Fernandez birdied 17 to break up the group of three that were tied for first at 7-under.
Zibilski (-3, 5th) was steady all day and shot 4-under on the front nine and 3-under on the back. The Springfield, Missouri, native started the weekend with a 3-over 75 in Friday’s first round and improved with a 1-over 73 on Saturday. Zibilski’s 65 is two strokes shy of her career low of 63, set in the second round at last year’s Dale McNamara Invitational.
Arkansas’ four other golfers had their moments, but could not stack back-to-back rounds. Junior Abbey Schutte (+8, T27) opened the tournament with a 1-under 71, but ended the weekend with a 76 and a 77. Clarisa Temelo (+11, T36), coming off an All-American freshman year, did not turn in a round at or under par to open her sophomore season. Sophomore Natalie Blonien (+12, T38), appearing in her third event for the Razorbacks, shot a 76 in each of the event’s three rounds. Arkansas native Anna Kate Nichols (+13, T41), this summer’s Arkansas state amateur champion, opened the weekend with a pair of 77s and improved with a 75 on the final day.
As a team, the Hogs finished in fourth place, three strokes behind third-place finisher Oklahoma State. Texas A&M finished 26 strokes ahead of runner-up Vanderbilt to claim the team title.
