Estes-Taylor Adds International Flair

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – University of Arkansas women’s golf coach Shauna Estes-Taylor continues to expand this year’s signing class welcoming Maria Hoyos to the 2017-18 Razorback roster.

Considered one of the LPGA’s next rising star, Bishops Gate Golf Academy’s Hoyos moved into the Rolex Junior Golf Ranking Top-10 as a junior. Hoyos checks in from Pereira, Colombia, South America, where she helped Team Colombia defend its title as the championship of the Copa Los Andes in 2014.

Hoyos wins include the Wells Fargo Junior Classic (2015), South American Championship U18 (2014) with a runner-up finish in 2016, Copa los Andes (the South American Match Play Championship, 2013, 2014), The Columbian Open (2013), the South American U15 (2012, 2013, 2014), the Copa Arturo Calle U18 2013, 2014), and the Copa Hedurado Herrea U18 (2013). Hoyos won the three South American events in the same season.

Other events include a fifth-place finish at the PING Invitational (2015), the World Amateur Team Championship (2014), The Wyndham Cup (2015) and the Toyota Junior Golf World Cup (2013, 2014).

Hoyos was an American Junior Golf Association All-American in 2015, ranked as high as No. 9 in the Polo rankings and No. 65 in the Women’s Amateur Golf Rankings.

Hoyos is the daughter of Sandra Villegas and Alvaro Hoyos.

From Shauna Estes-Taylor
“I feel very lucky to have Maria Hoyos joining our program. She was a very highly recruited junior golfer and the minute she came for an unofficial visit I knew she was a perfect fit at Arkansas. She is a very seasoned competitor that has competed all over the world. She has very sound fundamentals and loves to win. She has the make-up and experience to have a big impact on our future success. She is very good friends with (current Razorback) Maria Fassi and I know that had a big influence on her choosing Arkansas. I look forward to her arrival in the fall and can’t wait to watch her succeed in our system.

The addition of Brooke (Matthews last week) and Maria gives our team even greater depth. We have created a competitive environment that allows each young woman to be tested day in and day out. These two young ladies will come in and help us continue to strive for excellence in the classroom, community, and on the golf course.”
