Fassi Named PING WGCA Player of the Year

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The honors continue for University of Arkansas senior Maria Fassi as she earns PING Women’s Golf Coaches Association Player of the Year honors.

Fassi was named as a WGCA First-Team All-American earlier in the day in a week that includes winning the NCAA Championship individual title. She helped the Razorbacks advance to NCAA Championship match play for the first time in program history.

A native of Pachuca, Hidalgo, Mexico, Fassi capped off her senior season by winning the individual NCAA title with a 54-hole score of 211 (-8), helping Arkansas earn the No. 4 seed for match play. She posted a 71.18 scoring average and notched five top-five finishes during the season, including a win at the SEC Championship. Fassi netted 20 under-par rounds and seven in the 60’s over the course of the season. She also finished runner-up at the inaugural Augusta National Women’s Amateur in April.

About the Award
Recognized annually as the top honor in women’s collegiate golf, the PING WGCA Player of the Year Award is awarded to the best player in Division I, II and III women’s golf. The award was first given in 1987 and the names of recipients reads as a who’s who of the best of the ladies game including Amanda Blumenherst (3-time), Lorena Ochoa (2-time) and Annika Sorenstam. The recipient is selected by a prestigious collection of women’s collegiate golf coaches who follow criteria that has been established to identify the finest player for the past year. These criteria include:

•Head to head competition
•Comparison with common opponents
•Scoring average
•Place finishes in regular season events and tournament wins
•Strength of schedule
