COLUMBUS, Ohio – Three strokes are all that separate the University of Arkansas women’s golf team from the final cut after second round action on Tuesday at the 2017 NCAA Columbus Regional Championship.
Arkansas shaved eight strokes off its round one total shooting a 301 and their 610 total has the Razorbacks in eighth place overall. The top six teams in the Regional Championship move on to the NCAA Championship at Rich Harvest Farms, Illinois, next week.
Sophomore Cara Gorlei continued to play well and junior Alana Uriell rallied in the second round to pace the Razorbacks. Gorlei is in the clubhouse tied for fourth overall shooting 74–72—146 for two rounds. She had a balanced day with three birdies and three bogeys for her even–par 72. She was one of just 14 rounds of even or under par golf in the field of 178 players on Tuesday.
Much calmer winds in round two aided Uriell’s good score. The Carlsbad, California native bettered her score by eight strokes with a one–over 73. She is tied for 37th overall. Uriell’s round started tough on the Scarlet Course on the campus of The Ohio State with three bogeys in the first five holes.
She settled in with birdies on No. 6 and No. 9 to turn 1–over. She added two birdies and two bogeys for an even par 36 on the back nine to finish her round.
Sophomore Kaylee Benton was steady, matching her round one total in round two, shooting 77–77—154. She and Uriell are tied with several other players for 37th overall. Senior Summar Roachell posted scores of 77–79—156 and is tied for 53rd while sophomore Maria Fassi is tied for 75th shooting 81–80—161.
Fourth–ranked Florida leads the field for the second consecutive day at 590. Host, No. 29 Ohio State is second shooting 591, followed by No. 5 Florida State with 597, No. 12 South Carolina with 598, No. 33 Michigan with 605 and No. 27 Purdue with 607 to round out the top six teams.
Arkansas will tee off with No. 21 Texas A&M and No. 20 Colorado at 7:30 a.m. local, 6:30 a.m. central from hole one. It will be the sixth consecutive competitive round the Razorbacks and Aggies have played together after pairing for three rounds at the Southeastern Conference Championship and the first two rounds at this week’s regional event. Arkansas played with Colorado in the first round on Monday.
From Shauna Estes–Taylor
We have prepared this team for these situations and they have every tool they need to be successful around this golf course tomorrow. It’s just a matter of them going out and taking care of their golf ball, taking care of their game. You can’t get greedy or force anything. You have to stick to the game plan that we have. This course demands your presence on every shot and if they do that, we’ll be fine. We have to go out and fight our tail off tomorrow.
About Cara Gorlei in round two
Cara does an amazing job of not worrying or stressing if she hits a bad golf shot because she has such a tremendous short game. It really frees her up on the course. She hit it in the right places and gave herself opportunities and converted when she had them. She had a solid round of golf out here today.
