Gymnastics Opens Regional Competition Friday in Kentucky

The ninth-seeded Gymbacks begin the next phase of postseason competition this weekend as they head to the Lexington Regional.

Arkansas will compete in the first regional semifinal on Friday, April 3 against No. 8 Missouri, NC State and Maryland at 12 p.m. CT at Historic Memorial Coliseum in Lexington, Ky. The Gymbacks will start the day on floor, and then proceed in order with vault, bars, and the final rotation of their day, beam.

The top two teams from the afternoon session will advance to compete against the top two teams of the evening semifinal (No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 16 Kentucky, Ohio State and Central Michigan/Rutgers) in the regional final on Sunday, April 5 at 4 p.m.

The two top squads in Sunday’s regional final will punch tickets to the NCAA Gymnastics Championships in Fort Worth, Texas, April 16-18. Individual NCAA berths will be up for grabs for the top athletes on each event and all-around from non-advancing teams, based on Friday’s combined semifinals results.

The regional is full of familiar competition for the Gymbacks, as all four seeded teams hail from the SEC. Arkansas is 1-5-1 combined against Oklahoma, Missouri and Kentucky this season with an average score of 197.305 in those outings.

Among their semifinal foes, Arkansas is the top team on vault and beam with event NQS of 49.300 and 49.320, respectively. Missouri takes the high score on bars (49.308) and floor (49.433).

The Gymbacks carry a 197.170 team NQS into regionals, and the nine seed is the highest for Arkansas since 2010, the highest in head coach Jordyn Wieber’s tenure, and ties for highest ever. Under Wieber, the Gymbacks have advanced to the regional final in four times and have earned one team berth to nationals in 2024.

All sessions of regional competition will be streamed live on ESPN+, with live scoring available via Virtius.
