Razorbacks Lose to No. 5 Texas in Austin
AUSTIN, Texas – The Arkansas women’s basketball team (7-10, 0-2 SEC) lost its SEC road opener to No. 5 Texas, 90-56, on Sunday afternoon at the Moody Center.
Razorback Guard Izzy Higginbottom scored the game’s first points and Arkansas hung around in the first quarter despite two fouls on Vera Ojenuwa in the first two minutes of the game. With Ojenuwa’s absence, Texas scored its first 10 points in the paint.
Arkansas opened the second quarter with four points to cut the Longhorns’ lead to three points, the closest the Hogs got to retaking the lead for the remainder of the game. Texas’ Jordan Lee hit back-to-back threes and the home team finished the half with a 15 point lead, 40-25.
Higginbottom reached double figures for the 17th straight game to start the third quarter. The Hogs went 4-4 from the field and cut Texas’ lead to 11 points, but couldn’t get over the hump. The third quarter was good for both teams, with Texas scoring 28 points and Arkansas scoring 24, each team’s highest scoring quarter.
The Longhorns ran away with the game in the fourth and got up as much as 34 points. Both of Arkansas’ bigs, Ojenuwa and Danika Galea, fouled out early in the final quarter. Texas closed out the game with a 17-2 run.
The Hogs didn’t shoot their first free throw until the 4:17 mark in the second quarter but the squad finished 17-22 (77%) from the line and bested Texas’ 73% (19-26). Higginbottom recorded her ninth perfect performance from the line this season and shot 8-8.
The Longhorns finished with six players in double figures: Aaliyah Moore (17 points), Justice Carlton (15 points), Jordan Lee (13 points), Rori Harmon (12 points), Bryanna Preston (11 points) and Kyla Oldacre (10 points).
