José Marin Leads No. 2 Arkansas in Round One at NCAA Championship
CARLSBAD, Calif. –Arkansas sophomore and reigning SEC Player of the Year Maria José Marin (-2, T10) fired a 2-under par 70 to lead the Hogs (+9, T21) in the first round of the NCAA Championship at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California.
José Marin was the only Razorback to finish par or better as high coastal winds made playing conditions tricky on Friday afternoon, particularly on the back nine. The Hogs got off to a 3-under start on the back nine until they reached No. 13, which played as the toughest hole of the day. The par-4, 369 yarder claimed 65 bogeys or worse on day one and that’s where scores started going up.
After the -3 start, Arkansas went +9 on the remaining six holes before making the turn after No. 18.
The Razorbacks had another strong start on holes 1, 2 and 3 and after four of five Hogs birdied No. 2 and José Marin and Abbey Schutte birdied twice. Arkansas jumped to +7 before more bogeys fell on the final five holes.
The two leaders through the first round, Vanderbilt at 6-under and Oklahoma State at 4-under, both had morning tee times. They are the only teams in the entire field under par through 18 holes. Arkansas will need a top 15 finish after Sunday’s third round to advance to a fourth round of stroke play to determine the final 8 teams for match play.
The Hogs will start day two in the early wave, with the first tee time set for 8:30 a.m. CT off the first hole, alongside No. 1 Stanford (+5, T11) and No. 3 South Carolina (+9, T21).
