José Marin Named SEC Golfer of the Week
FAYETTEVILLE – Maria José Marin earned SEC Co-Golfer of the Week following her second career runner-up finish at the MountainView Collegiate, as announced by the league on Wednesday. This marks José Marin’s fourth weekly honor in seven tournaments, as well as first Golfer of the Week award, with the other three coming as Freshman of the Week. Now with four weekly honors, José Marin has surpassed Stacy Lewis (2004-05) and Maria Fassi (2017-18) for most weekly honors in a season, as both received three in their respective years.
José Marin finished second at the MountainView Collegiate with an 8-under 208 (72-66-70). The freshman recorded her third top five showing as a Hog. Her 66 in the second round became a new career-low round, as well as the sixth round she has shot in the 60s at Arkansas.
The Cali, Colombia product finished at par or better in each of the three rounds, marking 17 rounds out of 20 total played she has finished at par or better this season. In this tournament, José Marin finished with 38 pars and 12 birdies. José Marin’s 2.75 par 3s average was tied for a tournament’s best and her 3.93 par 4s average was tied for the sixth lowest in the tournament field.
This season, José Marin paces the Hogs with a 70.45 scoring average. After this past weekend, José Marin jumped three spots in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, currently ranked No. 15. She is also No. 2, according to the most recent Scoreboard Powered by Clippd rankings.
Arkansas is coming off its fifth top five finish of the season following a tie for fourth at the MountainView Collegiate with a 1-under 863 (291-283-289). The Hogs, who are No. 8 in the most recent Scoreboard Powered by Clippd rankings, will put a cap on the regular season at The Bruzzy hosted by North Texas at Dornick Hills in Ardmore, Oklahoma from Saturday, March 30 to Sunday, March 31.
