José Marin Wins SEC Freshman of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE – Maria José Marin has been tabbed SEC Freshman of the Week, as announced by the league Wednesday. In her first collegiate golf tournament, José Marin is coming off a Runner Up performance at the Carmel Cup from Sept. 2-4 in Pebble Beach, California.

José Marin, who has now jumped up to No. 27 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, had been on campus as a freshman for one week before going to the Carmel Cup and tying the Arkansas freshman 54-hole record of 11-under par, which was set by Emily Tubert at the Las Vegas Collegiate in 2010. The Cali, Colombia native got the job done behind a team-high 14 birdies and just three bogeys, none in the first and third rounds. She was the lowest scoring freshman in the talented field and was just one of two golfers to finish under par by double digits.

The freshman was huge in Arkansas’ 14-under finish to round out as the Carmel Cup Runner Up. The Hogs finished ahead of SEC squads Mississippi State, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt, while only being beat out by preseason No. 1 Stanford.

Arkansas men’s and women’s golf are set to host the Blessings Collegiate Invitational from Monday, Oct. 2 to Wednesday, Oct. 4 at Blessings Golf Club. The tournament is free admission and coverage from the Johnson, Arkansas event will be broadcast on the Golf Channel.
