Overstreet In Contention For Match Play At Western Amateur
GLENCOE, Ill. – In a field that features the best amateur golfers in the world, Razorback rising sophomore Mason Overstreet shined through 72 holes and is in a playoff to advance to match play of the 115th Western Amateur at Skokie Country Club.
After finishing runner-up at the NCAA Championship just two months ago, Overstreet is in contention for a place in golfing history alongside Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods as winners of the Western Amateur.
Through 72 holes of stroke play, the Kingfisher, Oklahoma, native fired rounds of 69-67-69-71 – 276 (-8) to finish T-14th overall. He is in a four-person playoff for three available spots to become one of 16 players to advance to the match play portion of the championship. The playoff will take place Friday morning at 7 a.m. CT.
Following the sudden death playoff, the first round of the Western Amateur match play tees off at 8 a.m. CT, with quarterfinal matches to follow at 1 p.m. CT. Semifinal matches and the championship tilt will take place on Saturday, Aug. 5.
Overstreet had plenty of success in match play last month at the 2017 Oklahoma Golf Association State Amateur Championship, winning four straight matches to earn a spot in the semifinal round before falling to Cody Burrows.
Founded in 1899, the Western Amateur is the world’s third oldest amateur championship behind the British Amateur (1885) and the U.S. Amateur (1895), and regularly attracts on the top amateur players from across the country and around the world.
