Razorbacks Have 2 in the Final 8 at the US Women's Amateur

TULSA, Okla. – Rising Razorback senior Kendall Todd and rising sophomore Maria Jose Marin are two of the final eight left standing after they won both of their matches on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the 124th USGA U.S. Women’s Amateur, played at Southern Hills Country Club.

Todd had a close morning match, winning 2&1, then cruised to a 7&6 victory in the Round of 16 in the afternoon. Marin proved why she was a first team All-American this past season. First, she handled world #8 Rachel Kuehn in the Round of 32. Then, in the afternoon, she was 2-Down with three holes to play before winning holes 16, 17 and 8 to advance to the quarterfinal.

Friday (Aug. 9) will be the quarterfinals and live coverage will be streamed on Peacock from 2-5 pm (CT). Marin, ranked #15 in the world, will face #9 seed and Auburn Tiger Anna Davis, ranked #16 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. Todd, ranked 130th in the world, will face #10 seed and Stanford Cardinal Kelly Xu, ranked #48 in the world.

In the Round of 32, 18th-seeded Todd defeated Gabby Woods, 2&1, in a tough-fought match. Woods struck first by winning the 2nd hole. Todd then won four straight – holes 2-7 – to take a 3-Up lead. Woods won the 10th hole and Todd regained a 3-Up lead by winning the 12th. Woods then won holes 14 and 16 and was 1-Down with three to play. However, Todd won the 17th hole with a par to close out the match.

Later, Todd did not lose a hole in a 7&6 decision over Rocio Tejedo in the Round of 16. Todd won holes 1, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 12 en route to the victory.

In the Round of 32, Marin cruised to a 4&3 win over Rachel Kuehn, a four-time All-American who is ranked #8 in the WAGR. Marin won holes 2 and 3 to take an early 2-Up lead. Kuehn cut her deficit in half by winning the 5th hole – one of just two holes she would win in the match. Marin closed the front nine by winning holes 8 and 9 to take a 3-Up lead at the turn. Kuehn won the 10th hole and the two tied holes 11, 12 and 13 to give Marin a 2-Up lead with five holes to play. Marin won the 14th hole with a par and won the 14th hole with a birdie to clinch the 4&3 victory.

In the Round of 16, Marin dropped the opening hole and had to play catch-up the rest of the match versus Maisie Filler. Marin did win hole 2 to square the match, but Filler bounced back to win holes 3, 4 and 7 to lead 3-Up at the turn. Marin cut her deficit to one by winning holes 10 and 13. However, Filler won the 15th hole to take a 2-Up lead. Marin dug deep and won the 16th, 17th and 18th holes to get the win.
