Razorbacks involved in various national championships in July

EUGENE – Arkansas men will have a combined crew of 26 Razorbacks, alums and athletes with ties to the program competing in various national championships in July, including the USATF Championships at Hayward Field as well as the Jamaican Championships in Kingston held on July 6-9 this week.

The various national championships serve at the trials for the World Athletics Championships being held in Budapest, Hungary, this summer. Other national championships include Germany and Canada.

The USATF Championships also serve as a selection event for the 2023 NACAC U23 Championships in Costa Rica and the Thorpe Cup combined events meet in Marburg, Germany, this summer as well as the Pan American Games in Chile during the fall.

Coverage of the pair of USATF Championship meets will be broadcast live via a mix of USATF.TV+, CNBC, and Peacock. CNBC and Peacock coverage will air from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. (CT) p.m. on July 7 and 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. (CT) from July 8-9.

In the latest Track & Field News men’s formchart for the USATF Championships, there is one athlete with ties to the Arkansas program who are predicted to finish among the top three with two more predicted to place among the top six.

World record holder Ryan Crouser, who trains in Fayetteville, is the favorite to win the shot put title. Arkansas alum Jarrion Lawson is tabbed for fifth in the long jump while current Razorback Chris Bailey is predicted to place sixth in the 400m.

Other Arkansas entrants for the USATF Championships include Marqueze Washington (100m, 200m), James Benson II (200m, 400m), Connor Washington (200m), Austen Dalquist (1,500m), Jacob McLeod (10k), Tai Brown (110m hurdles), Tre’Bien Gilbert (110m hurdles), Matthew Lewis-Banks (110m hurdles), Kason O’Riley (high jump), Darryl Sullivan (high jump), Jalen Tate (triple jump), Jordan West (shot put), Erich Sullins (hammer), and Daniel Spejcher (decathlon).

Seven Razorbacks will travel to Kingston for the Jamaica Championships. The group includes double NCAA triple jump champion Jaydon Hibbert, double NCAA long jump champion Carey McLeod, NCAA 110m hurdle champion Phillip Lemonious, and NCAA discus silver medalist Rojé Stona.

In addition, Arkansas will have Ryan Brown (long jump, triple jump) and Shakwon Coke (long jump).

Bowerman finalist Hibbert is the 2023 world leader in the triple jump. Pinnock ranks third in the world in the long jump while McLeod is equal ninth and the pair rank 1-2 among Jamaicans. Stona ranks sixth in the world in the discus, and is currently the leading Jamaican. Lemonious is equal 14th in the world in the 110m hurdles and equal second among Jamaicans this season.

Competing in Kassel, at the German Championships, Elias Schreml will race in the 1,500m semifinal on Saturday, July 8, with the final being held on Sunday. Leroy Russell III will compete in the 800m at the Canadian Championships held in Langley, BC, from July 27-30.
