Razorbacks Prep for Mid-Week Matchup
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark- The University of Arkansas women’s tennis team continues its non-conference stretch of home matches this week when Wichita State visits on Thursday afternoon. The Hogs hold a 22-2 series advantage over the Shockers, with their eyes set on their 23rd win this Thursday.
Arkansas has been dominant all spring, winning both doubles matches and all six in singles play to top a strong Kansas team in January. The Razorbacks followed their dominating performance against Kansas with an identical sweep over Oral Roberts. The Razorbacks then improved to 4-0 on the season with a defeat of Kansas State (7-0) on Jan. 29.
After starting the season with consecutive wins against Missouri State (6-1) and Newman (6-1), the Shockers dropped two tough matches to Iowa State (0-7) and Louisville (1-6). The senior duo of Marta Bellucco and Sarvinoz Saidhujaeva came in at No. 23 in the ITA Preseason Doubles Rankings.
Indianna Spink racked up four impressive doubles and singles wins last weekend. The freshman played in both the one and two spots for the Razorbacks in their wins over Kansas and Kansas State. Spink’s success on the courts against tough opponents earned her SEC Freshman of the Week honors, announced on Feb. 3.
Spink’s doubles partner, fellow freshman Morgan Cross, also scored some recognition for her wins earning UTR ITA Player of the Week, also announced last Wednesday. The biggest win of the weekend for Cross and Spink came against No. 49 Ngounoue/Manu of Kansas. The duo clinched the doubles point against the Jayhawks helping the Razorbacks to a perfect 7-0 win.
