Razorbacks Ready to "Pack the Barn" for 2020 Home Opener

With one meet already under their belts, the Arkansas gymnastics team sets their eyes on no.3 Denver. The Pioneers travel to Fayetteville for the Gymback’s 2020 home opener in Barnhill Arena. The Razorbacks are ready to “Pack the Barn” on Friday evening, doors open at 5:30 p.m. and opening ceremonies begin at 6:45 p.m.

The Gymbacks return to Barnhill Arena after traveling to Gainesville, Fla., for its season opener, dropping the evening meet to the reigning SEC champs, 197.350-194.400. Senior Jessica Yamzon and sophomore Kennedy Hambrick compete all-around, scoring a 38.825 and 38.950 respectively. Junior Sophia Carter was the anchor for the Gymbacks on the floor and closed out the rotation with a strong 9.875, complete with beautiful presentation and a sky-high double pike as a last pass. The third rotation was the best showing of the night for the Gymbacks, combining three routines of 9.825 or higher for a total of 49.000.

Arkansas and Denver will meet for the 11th time in program history with Denver taking the top spot in seven of the previous ten meetings. The Razorbacks and Pioneers split the last two meetings, Arkansas defeated Denver in Fayetteville, 197.300-196.725 on March. 16, 2018. The Pioneers took first place in the collegiate challenege (Jan. 4) with a score of 196.700 and scored a 196.750 in its home opener to top visiting Minnesota (196.475) on Sunday (Jan. 12). Sophomore Alexis Vasquez (Arcadia, Calif.) collected her second consecutive Big 12 Conference Event Specialist of the Week award scoring a near-perfect 9.975 on beam during Denver’s home opener on Jan. 12 against Minnesota. It was a follow-up to her perfect 10.0 in the team’s Jan. 4 season opener.

The Hog Wild Band will be in attendance for Friday’s meet, bringing the energy to Barnhill Arena! Make sure to stick around after the meet for a post-meet autograph session with the Gymbacks.
