Schutte Honored as SEC Freshman Golfer of the Week
FAYETTEVILLE – The freshmen on the Arkansas women’s golf team continue to impress, as Abbey Schutte has been named SEC Freshman Golfer of the Week, as announced by the league on Wednesday. Schutte had an incredible showing at the Diamante Intercollegiate in Hot Springs Village last week, ending her fall season as the runner-up of the tournament.
Schutte finished in second at the Diamante Intercollegiate behind a career-low 9-under 207 (70-71-66). Her third-round showing was highlighted by her 6-under 66, where she logged one eagle, five birdies and just one bogey. The 66 in the final round moved her up 10 spots on the leaderboard to take sole possession of second place, and just three strokes off the individual medalist. Schutte’s 66 is the 12th lowest round in Arkansas history, as well as the best round by a Hog this season. Her par 3s average of 2.58 led the field.
The Goodyear, Arizona native has finished each of her five rounds played this season at under par. She holds a 69.80 scoring average and has placed in the top five in both of her tournament appearances for a .965 winning percentage.
Arkansas has now had an SEC Freshman Golfer of the Week in three of four chances, as Maria José Marin has won the other two. That marks the most in one season by an Arkansas women’s golf team.
The team has completed the fall season and will be ready to take the links again for the spring season starting with the Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande from Sunday, Feb. 4 to Tuesday, Feb. 6.
