Three Hogs Set to Compete at World Amateur Championships

Before getting the 2022-23 schedule rolling, three student-athletes from the Arkansas women’s golf team are primed to represent their home countries at the 2022 World Amateur Team Championships (WATC) from Wednesday, Aug. 24 to Saturday, Aug. 27. Ela Anacona (Argentina), Kajal Mistry (South Africa) and Ffion Tynan (Wales) will compete for the 29th Espirito Santo Trophy at Le Golf National in Guyancourt, France.

The WATC, which is conducted by the International Golf Federation, takes place biennially. However, with the 2020 championships cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s WATC is a first since 2018. Anacona, Mistry and Tynan are three of just 169 selected in the field with 56 different countries being represented. Three Hogs at the WATC is believed to be the best representation Arkansas women’s golf has had at the well-coveted event.

Each team will have three players that play 18-holes of stroke play starting Wednesday and going into Saturday. The total of the two lowest scores from each team represents the team score for each round. The 72-hole total across the four days denotes the team’s score for the tournament.

Anacona, who is representing Argentina, is coming off a solid junior year of collegiate golf. She tallied a fifth place showing at the NCAA Ann Arbor Regional, which was pivotal in the Hogs’ qualification for the NCAA Championship. Throughout the year, she logged two rounds in the 60s and six rounds at par or better. The Buenos Aeries, Argentina native scored a season-low 69 twice last season and was also tabbed to the SEC Community Service Team.

Mistry is one of three on team South Africa and is coming off her best year of collegiate golf. In her junior year, Mistry was tabbed as a Golfweek All-American Honorable Mention selection and an All-SEC First Team choice. Mistry won her first tournament last season at the MountainView Collegiate with a career-low 206, which also included a career-low 67 in round two. The Johannesburg, South Africa product is ranked No. 63, according to Golfstat and led the team with a 73.18 scoring average, as well as sported 15 rounds at par or better. This summer, Mistry placed seventh at the Gauteng North Open.

Tynan is closing out her busy summer with Team Wales this week. The sophomore appeared in six tournaments last season, logging a career-low 222 at the Moon Golf Invitational with a career-low 70 in round two. Her best finish was 18th at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup last fall. The Llanharry, Wales product has played in the most tournaments this summer with the highlight coming at the Welsh Ladies Closed Championships. Tynan has also represented Wales at the European Women’s Team Championship and Home Internationals.

The winning team will get custody of the Espirito Santo Trophy until the next WATC. First, second and third-place teams will be recognized and receive medals. The lowest scoring individual will be acknowledged at the closing ceremony.

Practice rounds take place Monday and Tuesday before the first round commences Wednesday. Tee times and live scoring information will be made available soon.
