Women’s Golf Sweeps Weekly Awards

FAYETTEVILLE – The Arkansas women’s golf team took home both of the SEC’s weekly awards, as Miriam Ayora was named SEC Golfer of the Week and Meghan Royal was tabbed the SEC Freshman Golfer of the Week. Both honors mark the first time since 2018-19 an Arkansas golfer has earned a league’s weekly award.

Ayora paced the Razorbacks for the fourth time this season after firing away a career-low 7-under 209 (70-70-69) at the MountainView Collegiate in Tucson, Arizona. The junior finished the tournament in 11th place to lead all other SEC golfers in the field. Ayora finished under par in all three rounds, including matching a season-low 69 in the final round, which was accomplished with five of her 14 birdies over the week. She had the fourth best par 5s average with a 4.5 average over the weekend among 90 golfers. This season, Ayora has logged 10 rounds at par or under and 66 birdies, which both lead the team.

Royal is coming off a career-low 3-under 213 (74-69-70) golfing at the MountainView Golf Club, where she tallied the second lowest score for the Razorbacks. The freshman’s best round came in the second, as she registered her first career round in the 60s with a 69, which was done behind four birdies and 13 pars. Her 41 pars were the third most among the field, while delivering the 16th best par 4s average at 3.9. She finished the week in a tie for 22nd. In her first-year collegiate campaign, Royal has delivered 37 birdies and six rounds at par or under.

Ayora was the first Razorback since Brooke Matthews in 2019 to win SEC Golfer of the Week, while Royal was the first SEC Freshman Golfer of the Week since Maria Hoyos in 2018. As a program, women’s golf now has had 23 league golfers of the week and four freshman of the week awards.

The team is primed for the final regular season tournament with the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic from Friday, March 24 to Sunday, March 26 at the University of Georgia Golf Course.
