#17 Arkansas Rallies but Falls at #20 Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. – Georgia raced out to an 11-0 lead and was in firm control for the first 23-plus minutes. Down 19 with 16:31 left, Arkansas turned the tables to tie the game at 68 and then again at 70 with 6:23 left in the game. The #20 Bulldogs, however, regained the advantage to pull away for a 90-76 victory over the #17 Razorbacks at Stegeman Coliseum.

The Razorbacks started their comeback with an 11-0 run highlighted by a Billy Richmond III blocked shot and a dunk. Overall, Arkansas used a 20-3 run, including a 7-0 run, to get to within one, 62-61.

Darius Acuff Jr., who scored 20 points, tied the game at 68 with a 3-pointer and hit two free throws to tie the game at 70.

Georgia answered with a 10-0 run and outscored the Hogs 20-6 to close the game.

Jeremiah Wilkinson led Georgia with 20 points and four steals. The Bulldogs had 12 steals for the game and forced 18 Razorback turnovers. Blue Cain added 18 points while Kanon Catchings and Jake Wilkens had 15 and 11 points, respectively.

Acuff added six rebounds, six assists and four steals. The Razorbacks finished with 11 steals. Richmond and Malique Ewin each scored 12 points for Arkansas.

Arkansas returns home to host nationally-ranked Vanderbilt on Tuesday (Jan. 20). Tipoff is set for  8 pm and the game will be televised on ESPN.

FIRST HALF: ARK: 32 – UGA: 45

  • Georgia started the game on an 11-0 run.
  • The Hogs settled down and, thanks to an 8-0 run, cut their deficit to nine (31-22).
  • However, Georgia’s hot shooting from deep kept the Razorbacks from getting too close. The Bulldogs were 7-of-20 from 3-point range while the Razorbacks were just 1-of-7.
  • Georgia forced 11 first-half turnovers and out-scored Arkansas, 17-4, on points off turnovers.
  • Acuff led Arkansas with 11 points.
  • Three Bulldogs scored double figures in the first half, Jake Wilkens (4-of-4 FG • 2-of-2 3PT) had 11 while Wilkinson and Kanon Catchings each scored 10 points.

 

SECOND HALF: ARK: 44 – UGA: 45

  • Acuff had five assists and three stelas with one turnover playing all 20 minutes of the second half.
  • Arkansas shot 50 from the field in the second half while holding UGA to 38.5%
  • Blue Cain led UGA in the second half with 13 points, going 6-of-7 from the field.
  • Arkansas was 10-of-10 at the line in the second half while UGA was 12-of-13. The teams combined for 5-of-9 shooting at the line in the first half.

  • Arkansas’ starting lineup was Darius Acuff Jr., D.J. Wagner, Billy Richmond III, Trevon Brazile and Nick Pringle.
  • Georgia’s Jeremiah Wilkinson scored the first points of the game with a floater at 19:39. Arkansas’s first points came from Darius Acuff Jr. on a 3-pointer at 16L36.
  • Arkansas’s first subs were Meleek Thomas, Malique Ewin and Karter Knox.
  • Arkansas and Georgia have met on 46 previous occasions, all coming since the Razorbacks joined the SEC for the 1991-92 season. Arkansas leads the all-time series 28-18 versus the Bulldogs.
