#21 Arkansas Trounces Tigers

BATON ROUGE, La. – Darius Acuff Jr. scored 28 points, Meleek Thomas added 20 and Trevon Brazile recorded a double-double to lead #21 Arkansas to a 91-62 victory at LSU Tuesday night.

The 29-point win ties for the 12th-largest margin of victory in an SEC game and the third-largest in a road SEC game. With the win, Arkansas sweeps the season series from LSU, winning 85-81 17 days ago in Fayetteville.

The Razorbacks beat Mississippi State by 20 (88-68) in Starkville on Saturday and, with its 29-point win at LSU, Arkansas has won back-to-back SEC road games by at least 20 points for the first time since joining the league. (HogStats)

Brazile not only had a double-double (14 points and 12 rebounds), but he also added five blocked shots and four steals.

In his two games versus LSU, Acuff has made a career-high 13 field goals in both wins. He scored a career-high 31 points versus LSU in Fayetteville last month and added 24 points versus the Tigers tonight.

The Razorbacks come home to face Auburn on Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14). Tipoff is set for 7:30 pm (CT) and the game will be televised on ESPN.

FIRST HALF: ARK: 42 – LSU: 27

  • For the fifth time this season, Arkansas held its opponent to fewer than 30 points. The season low is 19 by Jackson State, followed by Fresno State (24), LSU (27), James Madison (28) and Louisville (29).
  • This marks the first time ever Arkansas has led three SEC opponents by double digits at halftime (Ole Miss, Miss State and LSU). (HogStats)
  • Arkansas set the tone early on the defensive end, blocking three of the Tigers’ first five shots. Overall, LSU was 0-of-7 from the field and Arkansas had five blocked shots on LSU’s first 12 field goal attempts.
  • Arkansas raced out to a 10-2 lead at the first media timeout.
  • A Trevon Brazile 3-pointer at 6:52 gave Arkansas a 15-point lead (31-16), which was the largest lead to that point.
  • The Razorbacks went on a 7-0 run late to lead by 17 (42-25) with 22 seconds left.

SECOND HALF: ARK: 49 – LSU: 35

  • Arkansas was just 1-of-6 from 3-point range in the second half but still shot 64.3% from the field overall. The Tigers were held to 27.8% shooting from the field in the half. LSU was just 1-of-11 from 3-point range in the half.
  • LSU out-rebounded the Hogs, 23-17, in the half.
  • Acuff had 14 second-half points while Thomas added 12. Brazile had eight points and six rebounds with two steals and two blocked shots.
  • LSU’s Pablo Tamba was 5-of-7 at the free throw line and scored a team-best 11 points in the half.

  • Head coach John Calipari was serenaded to “Happy Birthday” by the Razorbacks in the locker room after the game. He turned 67 (Feb, 10, 1959).
  • For the second-straight game, Arkansas’ starting lineup was Darius Acuff Jr., Meleek Thomas, Billy Richmond III, Trevon Brazile and Nick Pringle.
  • For the second-straight game. Karter Knox (knee) and D.J. Wagner (ankle) were listed as out due to injury.

  • The 64 points in the paint was the second time to break 60 in the category this season. Arkansas had a season-best 66 in the win over South Carolina.
  • Malique Ewin left the game at 4:53 in the second half after cutting his forehead. He did not return and had four stitches to close the wound.
  • Arkansas had never won a road game when ranked #21 in the AP poll, Arkansas is now 2-1 in such games with back-to-back road wins over Miss State and LSU as the nation’s #21 team.
