Acuff Adds National Honors From AP, USBWA and CBS Sports
FAYETTEVILLE – Darius Acuff Jr. has added national Player of the Week honors from the AP and USBWA as well as earning national Freshman of the Week honors from CBS Sports, to go along with his SEC Player of the Week honor.
Acuff averaged 34.5 points, 5.0 assists and 4.5 rebounds in games versus #25 Alabama and Missouri. He scored 49 points at Alabama and 20 versus Missouri.
Acuff beat out AJ Dybantsa (BYU), Cameron Boozer (Duke) and Donovan Dent (UCLA) for the AP National Player of the Week.
He was USBWA Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week. Acuff shared the USBWA honor as the organization has expanded its national weekly honors program to now highlight five national Division I Players of the Week each week in conjunction with the Oscar Robertson National Player of the Year Trophy. Acuff was joined by AJ Dybantsa (BYU), Orlando Lovejoy (Detroit Mercy), Josiah Davis (Cal State Northridge) and Chance Westry (UAB).
– Dybantsa averaged 32.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists versus #4 Arizona and #6 Iowa State.
– Lovejoy averaged 28.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in wins over Milwaukee and Green Bay.
– Davis averaged 26.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 8.0 assists versus UC Santa Barbara and Long Beach State.
– Westry averaged 23.5 points and seven assists versus Temple and Memphis.
It marked the second time Acuff has earned National Freshman of the Week honors from CBS Sports, which teams with the USBWA and Wayman Tisdale National Freshman of the Year Trophy to select weekly winners. He was also honored on Jan. 6 after his performances versus James Madison and Tennessee.
CBS Sports’ Cameron Salerno said of Acuff. “During that performance (at Alabama), Acuff had arguably the best individual performance of any player in college basketball this season — especially under the circumstances. Acuff played all 50 minutes (40 minutes regulation and 10 in the overtime periods) and left it all out on the floor.”
Arkansas returns to action on Wednesday (Feb. 25) versus Texas A&M. Tipoff in Bud Walton Arena is set for 8 pm (CT) and the game will be televised on ESPN2.
