Arkansas Downed By South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Arkansas was down big early and never recovered in a 72-53 loss at South Carolina Saturday afternoon.

The Razorbacks were down 32-14 at the break and were only 3-of-24 from the field. Overall, Arkansas missed its first 17 3-point attempts and finished the game 3-of-22 from deep.

Arkansas, down 35 with 6:03 left in the game, closed the game on a 22-6 run, using a 15-2 run with a 13-0 spurt, were only out-scored by one, 40-39, in the period.

South Carolina was led by Collin Murray-Boyles. He had 35 points (12-of-16 FG and 11-of-12 FT) with seven rebounds and four steals. Nick Pringle added 18 points and Zachary Davis had 10 rebounds.

Karter Knox, who was 6-of-6 at the line, led Arkansas with 11 points with a career-high five assists. Jonas Aidoo finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds. It is his 12th overall double-double and third as a Razorback.

Arkansas stays on the road to face Vanderbilt on Tuesday.

FIRST HALF: Arkansas: 14 – South Carolina: 32

  • Nick Pringle scored the game’s first six points for a 6-0 South Carolina 6-0 lead. The Gamecocks pushed the lead to 16-2, thanks to a 10-0 run to force an Arkansas timeout.
  • Arkansas started the game 1-of-17 from the field (0-of-7 3PT). The Hogs finished the half 3-of-24 overall (12.5%) and 0-of-8 from 3-point.
  • The 14 points is the second-fewest by Arkansas in the shot clock era. The fewest is 12 at Nebraska in the 1987 NIT. Overall, it ties for seventh-fewest in the first half.
  • Jonas Aidoo scored 6 of the Razorbacks’ 14 points and had 10 rebounds.
  • Arkansas out-rebounded the Gamecocks, 22-18.
  • South Carolina had nine assists on 13 made baskets and committed just three turnovers.
  • Collin Murray-Boyles led USC with 11 points.

SECOND HALF: Arkansas: 39 – South Carolina: 40

  • Arkansas had seven assists on its 12 made baskets in the period. Karter Knox led the way with four.
  • Karter Knox led the team with nine points in the half with Johnell Davis and Billy Richmond III each adding seven.
  • Collin Murray-Boyles scored 24 points in the second half, going 7-of-9 from the field and 10-of-11 at the line.
  • South Carolina also had seven assists on its 12 made baskets.
  • Arkansas was down by 35 (66-31) with 6:03 left. After that, Arkansas went on a 15-2 run. Johnell Davis scored five points in the run, as did Zvonimir Ivisic, while Karter Knox scored four.
  • Over the final 6:03, Arkansas out-scored South Carolina, 22-6.

GAME NOTES:

  • For the second straight game, Arkansas’ starting lineup was D.J. Wagner, Johnell Davis, Karter Knox, Trevon Brazile and Zvonimir Ivisic.
  • Arkansas won the opening tip. Arkansas has won the tip 22 times in 29 games.
  • South Carolina’s Nick Pringle scored the game’s first points with a dunk at 19:15. D.J. Wagner scored the Razorbacks’ first points with a floater at 17:08.
  • Jonas Aidoo was Arkansas’ first sub.
  • Arkansas and South Carolina have met on 40 occasions, all since the Gamecocks and Razorbacks joined the SEC (1991-92).
  • Arkansas still owns a 23-17 advantage in the series but South Carolina now leads 9-8, in games played in Columbia.
  • Arkansas missed its first 17 3-ponit attempts. In 2022, Arkansas also struggled from deep at South Carolina. The Hogs were 0-of-11 from deep for the game. That was the last time Arkansas did not make a 3-pointer. Also, that snapped a streak of 1,092 consecutive games of making at least one 3-pointer for the Hogs, which was the third-longest streak in the nation at the time.
  • Zvonimir Ivisic had four blocked shots. That is the fifth time in his career (fourth time this season) he has blocked four shots in an SEC game.
  • Freshman Jaden Karuletwa saw his first action in an SEC game. It was his third appearance for the Razorbacks this season, missing the first 10 games with an injury, and his first action since playing back-to-back games versus UCA and NC A&N in December.
