Brazile and Acuff Sweep SEC Honors; Acuff Adds 2nd Honor
FAYETTEVILLE – After leading the Razorbacks to a win over #16 Texas Tech, Arkansas swept this week’s SEC Men’s Basketball honors as Trevon Brazile was selected as the SEC Player of the Week and Darius Acuff Jr. was tabbed the SEC Freshman of the Week, the league announced today.
Acuff was additionally named Dick Vitale’s Diaper Dandy Freshman of the Week.
Brazile recorded a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds in the win over #16 Texas Tech Saturday in the Revocriut Rematch. Acuff scored 20 points to go with eight assists, four rebounds and a block in the win.
For Brazle, it marks his second SEC Player of the Week honor. During the 2023-24 season, Brazile led Arkansas to a win over then #7 Duke in the ACC/SEC Challenge, scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds while making four 3-pointers. Acuff earns his second-straight SEC Freshman of the Week honor.
Brazile:
- Recorded his third double-double of the season and 13 for his career (24 points and 10 rebounds).
- The 24 points were one shy of a career high … His eight field goals made (8-of-13) and four 3-pointers made (4-of-5) tied career highs.
- Added two blocked shots, including one with Arkansas leading by six with 45 seconds left, to help seal the win.
- Scored 18 points with eight rebounds in the second half to spur the come-from-behind win … Was 6-of-9 from the field in the second half, including 2-of-2 from 3PT, and was 4-of-4 at the line with eight of his 10 rebounds.
- Specifically, with Arkansas down five (68-63 with 9:58 left), Brazile hit a 3-pointer with 9:11 left to cut the deficit to two and, after a Texas Tech jumper put TTU up four, Brazile drilled another 3-pointer with 8:21 to get the Hogs to within one … Later, he made a jumper in the lane with 5:20 left to put Arkansas up one 78-77, a lead the Hogs would not relinquish
- That jumper in the lane spurred a 6-0 Razorback run – all coming from Brazile, who capped the spurt with a highlight reel dunk.
- Overall, Brazile’s two 3-pointers midway through the half started a 26-15 Razorback run to turn a five-point deficit into a six-point lead (89-83 with 58 seconds left) … Brazile scored 14 of the Hogs’ 26 points in the run.
- Brazile capped the run with two free throws to put Arkansas up six and, on the TTU ensuing possession, Brazile had his aforementioned blocked shot to seal the win.
Acuff:
- Scored 20 points with eight assists (vs 2 turnovers).
- Was +17 in the seven-point win … He was the only Hog that was in double-digits in plus/minus.
- Had a personal seven-point scoring run for the Hogs in both the first and second halves.
- With his performance, Acuff now ranks sixth among NCAA freshmen in scoring (17.7 avg.) and second among NCAA freshmen in assists (5.7).
- However, those averages bump up to 18.5 and 7.25 in games versus ranked opponents (16 & 6 at Michigan St • 21 & 5 vs Duke • 17 & 10 vs Louisville • 20 & 8 vs Texas Tech)
Arkansas returns to action Tuesday (Dec. 16) when the Razorbacks host Queens. Tipoff in Bud Walton Arena is set for 8 pm (CT) and the game will be televised on SEC Network.
