Brown 4th in 400m final, Brooks currently 3rd in heptathlon

EUGENE – The women’s 400m final on Sunday at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials had a range of emotions as Alexis Holmes set a career best of 49.78 seconds to place third and earn a position on Team USA for the Paris Olympics.

Razorback freshman Kaylyn Brown finished fourth with a 50.07 and Shamier Little placed ninth in 50.96.

In the heptathlon, Taliyah Brooks is currently in third place with a first day score of 3,861 points while Alex Gochenour-Brondyke is in 17th place with 3,400 points. Anna Hall leads the heptathlon with 3,884 points and is followed by Chari Hawkins with a 3,874 tally. The second day of the event will include the long jump, javelin and 800m.

Arkansas alum Chris Bailey advanced to the final of the 400m while Lance Lang broke his Arkansas school record in the 100m semifinal.

Bailey finished second in the first semifinal heat with a 44.82 and his time was fifth best overall. Quincy Hall led the field with a 44.42 over a 44.44 for Bryce Deadmon.

James Benson II ran 45.30 for sixth place in the second heat. Michael Norman won the final heat in 45.30 to earn an automatic position in the final. The last time qualifier was 44.95 by Justin Robinson. TJ Tomlyanovich placed seventh in heat three with a 46.65.

Lang bettered the UA school record of 10.04 he shared with Jarrion Lawson with a 10.03 (1.5 wind) to finish fourth in the third semifinal heat. The final time qualifier for the final was 9.97.

Kendall Ellis registered another career best to win the women’s 400m final in 49.46 with Georgia’s Aaliyah Butler runner-up in a career best of 49.17. Holmes produced her first sub 50 in claiming third.

The top three in the 400m will be included in the 4 x 400m relay pool and selections for the rest of the relay pool are discretionary. Fourth-place Brown will be a strong candidate for the relay pool.

Brooks opened in with a 13.30 in the 100m hurdles for 1,080 points and the final three hurdles became a challenge when her trail foot clipped hurdle 8 and 9 causing her to get over the final hurdle awkwardly. Gochenour-Brondyke posted a time of 13.84 for 1,001 points.

In the high jump a 5-10.5 (1.79) clearance by Brooks picked up 966 points while Gochenour-Brondyke scored 747 off a 5-3.25 (1.61) clearance. Brooks added 809 points from a 46-8.25 (14.23) shot put while Gochenhour-Brondyke had 757 points from a 44-1.25 (13.44) toss.

Wrapping up the first day with the 200m, Brooks ran 23.74 for 1,006 points as Gochenhour-Brondyke added 895 from a 24.91.
