Day Two in Dallas Capped off with Platform Diving Record
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Razorbacks split with TCU and SMU in day two of the three-team meet in Dallas, outscoring TCU 161-137 and being outscored by SMU 123-171. Diver Maria Jose Sanchez etched her name into the record book with an impressive showing in the platform diving event.
The Razorbacks secured event wins in the 200 Medley Relay, 50 Free, and Platform Diving. The A Relay consisting of Gracie Colvin, Bradi Jones, Bella Cothern, and Delaney Harrison finished in 1:39.11. Bella Cothern picked up her second win in the 50 Freestyle in as many days, posting a speedy 22.39 finish, an NCAA B-Cut time.
Head Coach Neil Harper said of this weekend’s challenging meet: “This weekend was a good opportunity to see where we are in preparation for our Fall Invite goals. Competing at TCU yesterday and then SMU today provided a tough two day challenge. Bella and Reka both performed NCAA B cuts and we had some personal bests today. I thought our divers did a great job and Majo breaking the school record in the platform event today was the highlight of the weekend.”
Maria Jose Sanchez added to an impressive portfolio of diving performances with an astounding 319.75 in today’s platform event, eclipsing Liana Bugslag’s 2012 record of 297.98. In her time at Arkansas, Sanchez has consistently posted some of the highest point scoring dives of the season, and she earned SEC Diver of the Week honors the week of October 1. She has posted NCAA Zone Diving qualifying scores in 1-meter, 3-meter, and platform. Lotti Hubert dove to a 2nd-place finish on 1-meter, scoring 306.70, an NCAA Zone-qualifying score. Malea Martinez had a great showing on 3-meter, placing 3rd with a score of 315.15.
Head Diving Coach Abel Sanchez commented on the great performances posted by the Razorback divers this weekend: “All the divers performed well this weekend. They’re all growing, learning and looking better every week. They continue to train hard, in and out of the pool.”
