Hogs cruise by Bulldogs, 88-68

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Trevon Brazile scored an SEC career-high 19 points with eight rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots while Darius Acuff Jr. scored 24 points with eight assists to lead #21 Arkansas to an 88-68 victory at Mississippi State Saturday afternoon.

The Razorbacks (17-7; 7-3 SEC) were playing short-handed as D.J. Wagner and Karter Knox were sidelined due to injury.

The win was just the seventh in 29 trips to Starkville for Arkansas, and the first by the Razorbacks at Miss State since 2015, as the team snapped a six-game losing streak at Humphrey Coliseum. However, Razorback head coach John Calipari improves to 22-1 all-time versus the Bulldogs and 10-0 in Starkville. (His only loss to MSU came in the 2021 SEC Tournament.)

In addition to Brazile and Acuff, Billy Richmond III tied his SEC career high with 14 points and Meleek Thomas added 17 points. Nick Pringle grabbed a game-high and season-best 11 rebounds.

With the Razorback injuries, Springdale freshman Isaiah Sealy saw extended minutes and responded with six points and three blocked shots, giving him four rejections for the season.

After a sluggish start that saw the Razorbacks miss their first five shots, the Hogs found their mark, making 12 of their next 14 shots to build a 15-point lead. Over the span, Arkansas went on a 20-2 run and held a comfortable lead the rest of the game. The Bulldogs did get to within seven late in the first before the Hogs closed the half on a 7-0 run. The Hogs started fast in the second half and cruised to the win.

Josh Hubbard led the Bulldogs with 16 points. However, his SEC record of making a 3-pointer was snapped at 69 games dating back to his sophomore season. Achor Achor added 15 points and Jamarion Davis-Fleming had 12.

Arkansas stays on the road to play at LSU on Feb. 10. Tipoff is set for 8 pm (CT) and the game will be on SEC Network. The Razorbacks come home to face Auburn on Valentine’s Day before returning to the road to play at Alabama (Feb. 18).

FIRST HALF: ARK: 43 – MSU: 30

  • Arkansas used a 20-2 run, including a 13-0 spurt, to grab a 29-13 lead. The 16-point cushion was the largest of the half for the Hogs. MSU’s Josh Hubbard ended his team’s five-minute scoring drought with an old-fashion, 3-point play.
  • Miss State cut its deficit to nine (29-20) and later to seven (37-30).
  • However, Arkansas ended the half on a 6-0 run. Trevon Brazile made three free throws and, as the first half was coming to a close, Meleek Thomas had a steal with five seconds left that led to a Darius Acuff Jr. 3-pointer with one second left.
  • Brazile, who made two 3-pointers, led the Hogs with 13 points and three blocked shots. Acuff added 12 points and five assists.
  • Arkansas had seven blocked shots in the half, with Isaiah Sealy adding three.
  • Hubbard led the Bulldogs with 10 points.
  • Arkansas forced nine turnovers thanks to five steal,s with two by Malique Ewin and two by Thomas.
  • Arkansas had 11 assists on 17 made baskets with just four turnovers.

SECOND HALF: ARK: 45 – MSU: 38

  • While Miss State shot 50% from the field in the second half, the Bulldogs were just 2-of-11 from 3-point range.
  • Arkansas dominated the glass in the second half, out-rebounding the Bulldogs, 20-12.
  • Darius Acuff led Arkansas with 12 second-half points and Meleek Thomas added 10.
  • Nick Pringle had seven of his 11 rebounds in the second half.
  • In the first half, Arkansas had seven blocked shots to Miss State’s one. In the second half, the tables were turned with Miss State getting six to the Razorbacks’ two.

  • For the first time this season, Arkansas’ starting lineup was Darius Acuff Jr., Meleek Thomas, Billy Richmond III, Trevon Brazile and Nick Pringle.
  • Karter Knox (knee) and D.J. Wagner (ankle) were listed as out due to injury.
  • Trevon Brazile played all 40 minutes for the first time in his career, although he played a career-high 45:52 in a double-overtime win versus Stanford in Nov. 2023 at the Battle 4 Atlantis.
  • Trevon Brazile became the first Hog to get 19+ points, 8+ rebounds, 4+ blocks and 4+ assists in a game since Darnell Robinson’s 19-9-4-5 against Kentucky on 3/9/1996. (HogStats)
  • Trevon Brazile’s four blocked shots tied a season high and an SEC career high.
  • Trevon Brazile likes playing in the state of Mississippi. Before setting his SEC career-high of 19 points at Mississippi State today, he scored a then-SEC career-high 18 points at Ole Miss earlier this season.
  • Arkansas wore its traditional home white “Razorbacks” uniform as Miss State wore all maroon. Arkansas is now 1-1 in the Calipari era when wearing white on the road. (Arkansas lost at Mizzou last season.)
  • MSU’s Achor Achor scored the game’s first points, a layup at 19:09. Bily Richmond III scored the first points for Arkansas on a layup in the lane at 17:53.
  • Arkansas’s first sub was Malique Ewin.
  • With the win today, Arkansas improves to 3-0 after midweek SEC byes since the league went to an 18-game schedule for the 2012-13 season. The Razorbacks won at Kentucky last season after a bye and beat Georgia at home in 2024.
  • Arkansas and Mississippi State have met on 71 previous occasions. Arkansas has won two straight and holds a slight 37-34 advantage all-time. Since Arkansas joined the SEC, the Razorbacks lead the series, 32-30.
  • With the loss today, Miss State now leads 24-8 in games played in Starkville, including a 22-7 mark since Arkansas joined the SEC.

  • Isiah Sealy played 14:36 minutes and scored six points with three blocked shots. He had only played 10 minutes with two in three SEC games prior to Miss State. For the season, Sealy only had one blocked shot before getting three versus the Bulldogs.
  • Nick Pringle had a season-high 11 rebounds. In the previous five games, Nick Pringle had only totaled 10 boards.
  • Darius Acuff has scored at least 20 points in four straight games. That is the best streak by a Razorback since Khalif Battle scored at least 20 in five straight in the 2023-24 season. Todd Day has the record by scoring at least 20 in 10 consecutive games.
  • Coach Cal now has 894 on-court wins and is 6 shy of reaching 900 wins as head coach of an NCAA Division I program.
