Hogs Fall in Finale against Tigers

AUBURN, Ala. – No. 17 Arkansas (20-13, 5-7 SEC) coughed up an early three-run lead and was handed an 8-3 loss against No. 18 Auburn (22-9, 6-6 SEC) in the series-deciding finale Saturday afternoon at Plainsman Park.

With the loss, the Hogs dropped their first weekend series against the Tigers since 2017 and their second consecutive SEC weekend series of the year after beginning this season with back-to-back series wins against Mississippi State and South Carolina. Arkansas is 5-7 through its first 12 SEC games, its worst 12-game start to conference play since 2016.

The Hogs opened the scoring in the top of the second inning, loading the bases with no outs before breaking through for three runs. After Kuhio Aloy’s RBI groundout, Christian Turner delivered a two-out RBI single to put Arkansas ahead, 3-0.

Auburn, however, punched back with eight unanswered runs, including a three-spot in the bottom of the second. The Tigers tagged Razorback starter Colin Fisher for five runs on five hits and two walks in his 2.2 innings of work on the mound, and tacked on more against the bullpen with one in the bottom of the fifth before scoring a pair in the sixth.

In relief of Fisher, Parker Coil (2.2 IP, 1 R, 1 SO) and Cole Gibler (2.0, 0 R) were bright spots out of the bullpen. The left-handers combined for 4.2 innings of one-run ball, but the Hogs were unable to put together a rally at the plate.

Offensively, the Razorbacks were limited to just four hits and one walk. Carter Rutenbar, who singled and scored a run, extended his team-leading reached base streak to 11 consecutive games in Saturday’s setback at Auburn.

Up next, Arkansas will host in-state foe Little Rock at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, inside the friendly confines of Baum-Walker Stadium before hitting the road for an SEC road weekend series against Alabama on April 10-12 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
