Why is the University of Arkansas implementing the use of metal detectors?
The University of Arkansas Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is implementing the walk-through metal detectors to enhance our safety procedures at Bud Walton Arena. This is in an effort to make sure our fans, student-athletes, coaches and game day personnel can enjoy the games in a safe environment.
Has there been any prior threats made against Bud Walton Arena?
No. Like many collegiate sporting venues, the University of Arkansas is implementing the walk-through metal detectors as a way to enhance safety procedures. Metal detectors are already mandatory at NFL, NBA and MLB venues, and they are in use in many collegiate venues throughout the nation.
Will there be a metal detector(s) at every gate?
Yes. All fan entrances to Bud Walton Arena will be utilizing metal detectors to screen fans entering the building. Additionally, handheld wands will be utilized to screen individuals, in the case a secondary screening is needed.
Does the clear bag policy remain in effect with the addition of the metal detectors?
Yes, the clear bag policy will still be in effect. To expedite the screening process, it is recommended that fans use their approved clear bag to carry all approved items. Each clear bag will be inspected by gate security staff at each metal detector.
Where will the metal detectors be located?
Metal detectors will be located at each fan entrance of Bud Walton Arena. Screening of fans entering gates on the north, east and west sides of Bud Walton Arena, will be conducted OUTSIDE Bud Walton Arena on the respective gate plazas. Screening of fans at the south entrance of Bud Walton Arena will be conducted INSIDE the south lobby of Bud Walton Arena.
Are there metal detectors to accommodate screening for fans in wheelchairs?
Yes. At each of the main entrances of Bud Walton Arena, there is a metal detector designed to accommodate fans utilizing a wheelchair. Gate personnel may direct fans to the designated metal detector at each location.
How will the process work once a fan approaches the metal detector?
Fans will be asked to follow the instructions of the gate security personnel and place their approved clear bags on the screening tables before passing through the metal detectors.
Based on the metal detectors in use at Bud Walton Arena, fans DO NOT need to remove:
- cell phones
- keys
- belts
- wallets
- watches
- jewelry
- coins
- jackets
Those who have prohibited items will have to return those items to their cars before entering the arena.
What happens if the metal detector alarm is triggered?
If an alarm is triggered, fans may be asked to remove items from their pockets and then re-enter the walk-through metal detector. If an alarm is triggered again, fans will be asked to step to the side for a secondary screening conducted with a handheld wand.
What happens to individuals who cannot walk through a metal detector due to a medical condition?
According to the manufacturer, the CEIA walkthrough metal detector in use at Bud Walton Arena has been tested and approved by all appropriate authorities for human exposure of electromagnetic fields; this includes pregnant women, those having implantable medical devices and magnetic media. However, if a fan has a medical condition and doesn’t feel comfortable passing through the metal detector, they can identify their need to gate security personnel and will be offered alternative screening. Please note, to gain entry into Bud Walton Arena, all individuals are subject to security screening.
Will tickets be scanned prior to or after metal detector screening?
Fans must pass through the metal detector screening BEFORE scanning their ticket for the game. Fans entering the north, east and west entrances of Bud Walton Arena will scan their tickets upon entry into venue, after completing the security screening outside the arena. Those entering the south entrance of Bud Walton Arena will complete security screening inside the lobby, before scanning their tickets at the top of the main staircases, located at the entrances of the arena concourse. Those using the elevator or auxiliary stairs located on the lobby level, may scan their tickets at those locations.
Will gates at Bud Walton Arena open earlier due to the use of metal detectors?
No. Public entrances to Bud Walton Arena will continue to open 90 minutes prior to men’s basketball games and 60 minutes prior to women’s basketball games. Fans are encouraged to plan accordingly and arrive at least 15 minutes earlier than normal to help ensure they are in their seats for tipoff.
