Razorbacks Blitzed by Red Wolves in Midweek Loss

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas State (6-2) blitzed No. 6 Arkansas (6-2) with six runs, including a grand slam, in the top half of the second inning and never looked back on its way to a 12-4 win Tuesday afternoon at Baum-Walker Stadium.

The Razorbacks’ setback in Tuesday’s double midweek series opener marked their first loss against the Red Wolves in program history. Since 1947, Arkansas is now 6-1 against Arkansas State and 28-6 overall against in-state opponents.

Both teams combined for seven home runs on a gusty afternoon at Baum-Walker Stadium. Arkansas State blasted five long balls, including the decisive grand slam in the second inning, while Arkansas connected on a pair of solo shots.

True freshman Peyton Lee started on the mound and allowed six runs with two strikeouts over his two innings of work. Tate McGuire (2.0 IP, 2 R, 3 SO), Cooper Dossett (1.0 IP, 3 R, 1 SO) and Luke Cornelison (2.0 IP, 1 R, 2 SO) each allowed at least one run in relief, while Ethan McElvain went unscathed by tossing two shutout frames with a pair of strikeouts.

Offensively, Maika Niu (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) and Zack Stewart (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) were the lone Razorbacks to record multi-hit games. Niu swatted a leadoff home run, his second of the campaign, in the bottom of the first inning, while Stewart connected on his second homer of the season and 46th of his career in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Arkansas and Arkansas State conclude the double midweek series tomorrow at Baum-Walker Stadium. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, on SEC Network+ with Brett Dolan (play-by-play) and Troy Eklund (analyst) on the call.
