Stanek Advances to World Series with Astros

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Former Razorback and current Houston Astros pitcher Ryne Stanek is headed to the World Series for the second year in a row.

Stanek and the Astros, who are undefeated this postseason, swept the Seattle Mariners in the American League Division Series before rolling past the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series. Houston will take on the Philadelphia Phillies in this year’s Fall Classic, which gets underway on Friday, Oct. 28.

Stanek, who pitched for the Razorbacks from 2011-13, broke Houston’s reliever record for the lowest ERA in a single season, posting a minuscule 1.15 ERA over 54.2 innings out of the bullpen during the 2022 regular season. He has made two appearances in relief this postseason, striking out four in two scoreless innings of work thus far.

It is the second consecutive season that Stanek has advanced to the World Series with the Astros. He was also an important bullpen arm on last year’s team, which lost to former Razorback pitcher Drew Smyly and the Atlanta Braves in six games.

Five former Hogs have won a World Series ring, including Dick Hughes (St. Louis Cardinals, 1967), Eric Hinske (Boston Red Sox, 2007; New York [AL], 2009), Dallas Keuchel (Houston, 2017), Andrew Benintendi (Boston, 2018) and Smyly (Atlanta, 2021).
