
U.S. Reed Elected to Southwest Conference Hall of Fame
FAYETTEVILLE – U.S. Reed, who is known for hitting one of the most iconic shots in Arkansas basketball history, has been elected to the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame. He will be inducted on Aug. 5 as part of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame ceremonies in Waco, Texas.
Reed is the 14th Razorback from the men’s basketball program to enter in the SWC Hall of Fame joining Sidney Moncrief (2014), Nolan Richardson (2014), Eddie Sutton (2014), Todd Day (2015), Joe Kleine (2016), Lee Mayberry (2016), Ron Brewer (2017), Wear Schoonover (2017), Darrell Walker (2017), Marvin Delph (2018), Scott Hastings (2019), Glen Rose (2019) and Olver Miller (2024). He becomes the 74th Razorback overall to be inducted into the SWC Hall of Fame.
Reed (Pine Bluff, Ark. / Pine Bluff HS) helped Arkansas reach the NCAA Tournament in each of his four years, including a Final Four and national third-place finish in 1978, an Elite 8 berth in 1979 and a Sweet 16 appearance in 1981. Also, Arkansas won SWC titles in 1978, ’79 and ’81 while finishing second in 1980. Overall, his teams posted a 102-25 (.803) record over his four years.
With the Razorbacks, he scored 1,260 career points, currently 23rd in the Arkansas record books but ranked seventh when his collegiate career ended. He averaged a team-high 14.0 points in 1980 while also leading the team in field goal percentage (.557), free throw shooting (.796) and steals (36). In 1981, he averaged 13.0 points per game and shot 76 percent from the free throw line.
His half-court shot at the buzzer to beat Louisville in the second round of the 1981 NCAA Tournament is one of the signature moments in Razorback Basketball history and was named by Sports Illustrated as the second-most historic event in the history of the NCAA Tournament.
Reed was named an SEC Basketball Legend in 2007 and was inducted into the University of Arkansas Sports Hall of Honor in 2010 and was inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.
