Women's Track Maintains Top-5 Ranking
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas women’s track and field team continues its run as a top-five program in the country at No. 5 in this week’s release of the USTFCCCA national ranking. The Razorbacks opened the outdoor season as the seventh-ranked team and have reached as high as No. 3 in the polls. Arkansas returns to competition this weekend at the 106th Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
Through the first four weeks of their outdoor season, the Razorback women have collected 12 top-10 nationally ranked performances including eight top-five efforts. Two of those marks were recorded this past weekend from Dominique Scott at 1,500 meters and Jessica Kamilos in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 57th Mt. SAC Relays.
Scott ran a personal best of 4:12.16 which stands as the fourth fastest in the NCAA while Kamilos’ time of 9:57.17 is currently fifth. Scott and Sandi Morris have the top NCAA marks at 10,000 meters and in the pole vault, respectively. The Razorbacks also have top-five marks from Taylor Ellis-Watson at 200 meters, Sparkle McKnight in the 400-meter hurdles, Alex Gochenour in the heptathlon and their 4×400-meter relay.
Individually, Morris maintains her spot on the Bowerman Watch List which highlights 10 standouts throughout the indoor and outdoor seasons before semifinalists and finalists are selected toward the end of the year. Morris, the 2015 NCAA indoor champion in the pole vault, broke the outdoor collegiate record in her last outing with a clearance of 4.62m/15-1.75 at the John McDonnell Invitational.
In a show of strength across the SEC, the Razorbacks are one of eight teams ranked in Monday’s top-25 release. Five of the eight are ranked inside the top team while all eight are positioned within the top 21. The SEC Outdoor Championships will be contested April 14-16 at Spencer Stadium in Starkville, Miss. Arkansas is the defending SEC outdoor champion.
