World Championship hurdles: Silver medal for Little, Nugent places fifth

BUDAPEST, Hungary – A pair of World Championships hurdle finals held Thursday evening at the National Athletics Center produced a silver medal for American Shamier Little in the 400m hurdles while Jamaican Ackera Nugent placed fifth in the 100m hurdles.

A season best time of 52.80 by Little, an Arkansas volunteer assistant, enabled her to collect a second World Championships silver medal. Her first medal was claimed in 2015. Little finished fourth in the 2022 meet.

Femke Bol of the Netherlands won the race in 51.70 while the bronze went to Jamaica’s Rushell Clayton with a career best time of 52.81. An Area record was set by Kemi Adekoya of Bahrain in fourth place with a 53.09 clocking while American Anna Cockrell set a career best of 53.34 in fifth place.

A time of 12.61 by Nugent placed her fifth in the 100m final ahead of defending champion and world record holder Tobi Amusan’s 12.62.

Another Jamaican in the race, Danielle Williams, posted a winning time of 12.43 into a 0.2 wind with Puerto Rico’s Jasmine Camacho-Quinn runner-up in 12.44 while American Keni Harrison finished third in 12.46.

Finishing a stride ahead of Nugent in fourth place was Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas with a 12.52.

The sprint hurdle final featured five recent NCAA champions with Arkansas’ Nugent (2023), Amusan with UTEP (2017), Kentucky’s Comacho-Quinn (2016) and Harrison (20.15), as well as USC’s Nia Ali, who placed eighth in 12.78.
