
Arkansas Sinks Commodores
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Trevon Brazile recorded his first double-double of the year (season-high 16 points and season-high 14 rebounds) while Johnell Davis added 21 points to lead the Razorbacks to a 90-77 victory at Vanderbilt Tuesday night at Memorial Gym.
The Razorbacks used a 13-0 run late in the first half and opened the second with a 12-5 run, including a 7-0 spurt, and never looked back.
Vandy was down as many as 17 with 12 minutes to go in the second but worked its deficit to nine, 72-63 with 7:35 left. However, D.J. Wagner drilled a deep 3-pointer as the shot clock expired to put the Hogs back up by double digits. After the Commodores trimmed their deficit back to nine. Brazile answered with a 3-pointer to put the game out of reach.
After one of its worst shooting performances of the season at South Carolina Saturday, Arkansas bounced back to shoot 50.8% from the field. However, the key stat was Arkansas out-rebounding Vandy, 42-31. The 42 boards were the most by the Hogs in an SEC game this year (third-most of the season).
Arkansas blocked eight shots and held Vandy to 38.3% shooting, the lowest by an SEC opponent versus Arkansas this season.
Wagner and Zvonimir Ivisic each scored 14 points and Karter Knox added 10. It was the third time in the last four games the Razorback starting five has scored in double digits.
Tyler Nickel led four Vandy players in double digits with a team-high 16 points.
Arkansas closes the regular-season on Saturday (Mar. 8) by hosting Mississippi State. Tipoff is set for 11 am (CT).
FIRST HALF: Arkansas: 43 – Vanderbilt: 37
- Arkansas was down early but used a 10-1 run to get to within one, 19-18. Vandy answered with a 10-2 run to push its lead to 29-20.
- Down five (35-30) with 3:42 left in the half, Arkansas went on a 13-0 run to go up 43-35 that included two old-fashion, 3-point plays and a highlight real steal and dunk by Trevon Brazile.
- In that run, Arkansas made six straight shots and was 7-of-9 overall from the field while holding Vandy to 1-of-12 shooting from the field.
- Vandy was fouled with 0.5 seconds left and made two free throws to provide the 43-37 halftime score.
- Arkansas shot 51.5% from the field and held Vandy to 28.6% shooting.
- There were 10 blocked shots in the half, six by Arkansas and four by Vandy. There were 19 combined turnovers but only 10 combined steals.
- Johnell Davis led the Razorbacks with 15 points
- Trevon Brazile led the Hogs with six rebounds, two assists and two steals.
SECOND HALF: Arkansas: 47 – Vanderbilt: 40
- Trevon Brazile had a highlight reel putback dunk with 7:43 left to put Arkansas up 13 (72-59).
- D.J. Wagner was called for a foul on the ensuing possession and Coach Calipari received a technical foul. Vandy made all four free throws to get to within nine (72-63) with 7:35 left.
- Neither team scored over the next minute and a half until Wagner hit his long-range 3-pointer from straight away to give Arkansas its 12-point lead with 5:59 left.
- D.J. Wagner scored all 14 of his points in the second half, going 5-of-8 from the field (2-of-3 3PT) with three assists and zero turnovers.
- Trevon Brazile scored 11 of his 16 points, with eight rebounds, in the second half.
- Arkansas out-rebounded Vandy 22-10 in the second half and, thanks to nine offensive rebounds, out-scored VU 16-0 on second-chance points.
GAME NOTES:
- For the third straight game, Arkansas’ starting lineup was D.J. Wagner, Johnell Davis, Karter Knox, Trevon Brazile and Zvonimir Ivisic.
- Arkansas won the opening tip. Arkansas has won the tip 23 times in 30 games.
- Vandy’s AJ Hoggard scored the game’s first points with a jumper at 19:12. Johnell Davis scored the Razorbacks’ first points with a layup at 18:49.
- Billy Richmond III was Arkansas’ first sub.
- Brazile’s 14 rebounds were his second-best career effort, getting 17 in a double-overtime win over Stanford last season in the Bahamas. His 16 points were an SEC career-high and his fifth double-digit scoring game of the season.
- Brazile is the first Razorback to have at least 16 points, 14 rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots since Nick Davis, who ironically had 24, 15, 2 and 2 versus Vandy on Feb. 7, 1998 in Bud Walton Arena. (Hogstats.com)
- Arkansas’ high shooting percentage can be attributed to a season-high nine dunks.
- Vandy’s Justin Edwards was 0-of-12 from the field. He is the first Razorback opponent to shoot 0-of-12 (or worse) from the field since Florida’s Craig Brown was 0-of-12 in Barnhill Arena. Both players were 0-of-8 from 2-point and 0-of-4 from 3-point to go a combined 0-of-12. (Hogstats.com)
- This was the 46th meeting between Arkansas and Vanderbilt. All but 12 have come since Arkansas joined the SEC.
- The Razorbacks own a 31-15 advantage in the series, including a 30-14 margin in SEC meetings.
- Arkansas has won 9 of the last 12 games in the series.
- In games played at Vandy, the series is now tied 9-9. In SEC games played in Memorial Gym, Arkansas now leads 9-8
- Arkansas blocked eight shots (six in the first half). The Hogs have blocked at least five shots 19 times this season and in 14 of the last 20. The eight rejections tie for the second-most by the Hogs in an SEC game this season.
- This was the sixth time Arkansas scored at least 90 points and the second time in four games, beating Mizzou 92-85.
- Arkansas committed 15 turnovers. Amazingly, Arkansas is 14-9 this year when committing at least 15 turnovers.
- Arkansas is 11-0 this year when shooting at least 50% from the field and 12-1 this year when out-rebounding its opponent.
