Arkansas gymnastics scores season-high at No. 3 Florida

GAINESVILLE –The ninth-ranked University of Arkansas gymnastics team scored a season-best 195.75 in Southeastern Conference action against third-ranked Florida in Gainesville, Fla., Friday.

Arkansas finished the meet tying a season-best on vault with a 49.025 and setting a season-high on the bars with a 48.875.

“One of our major focuses for this meet was to not count a fall and we achieved that,” said Arkansas co-head coach Mark Cook. “We still had a few errors and we have to clean those up to reach our potential. We kept the meet close after several rotations and we’re very proud of that.”

Sophomore Casey Jo Magee tied her career-best with a 39.275 finishing third in the all-around competition. Magee tied for the bars title and was third on the beam.

Arkansas opened the meet on bars getting a 9.825 from Magee who tied her season high.

The Gym’Backs got a 9.80 from senior Emily Peacock on bars as the San Antonio, Texas, native finished tied for third on the event. But Florida was nearly perfect with a 49.375 taking an early lead as Arkansas posted a 48.875 on the bars.

Arkansas moved to the vault where Magee scored a season-best 9.80 and sophomores Amy DeFilippo and Michelle Stout paced Arkansas with 9.85s – a career-best for DeFilippo. Senior Samantha Cortez tallied a 9.80 and Springdale, Ark., sophomore Ashly McPherson finished with a 9.725.

Arkansas rebounded with a solid 49.025 tying the team’s season-best on vault as the Gym’Backs closed the gap with the third-ranked Gators, 98.20-97.90.

The Gym’Backs’ solid performances continued as Arkansas posted a 49.050 on the floor led by Peacock’s 9.875. Peacock tied for second leading Arkansas in the third rotation.

Magee, LaChance and Cortez all recorded 9.80s as the Gym’Backs continued to chase the Gators. Arkansas trailed Florida 147.450-146.950 after three events.

Florida’s scores continued to grow as they moved to the floor but Arkansas put together solid performances that were rewarded on the beam as well.

Magee tied for third on the beam with a 9.85 while Cortez posted a 9.80 and DeFilippo added a 9.775.

Arkansas finished with a 48.80 on the beam for a 195.75 at the meet.
