Lady'Backs 8-0 down North Texas
FAYETTEVILLE—It did not take long for the University of Arkansas women’s tennis team to improve to 8-0 with a 6-1 pounding of the North Texas Mean Green Sunday morning at the Dills Indoor Tennis Center.
The 8-0 record marks the best start to season in Lady Razorback tennis history, and equals the total number of wins from last season. With the loss, North Texas slides to 5-2 on the year.
The Lady’Backs saw singles action first due to North Texas travel arrangements, but it did not slow the Arkansas wave of momentum built up over recent weeks. Karina Ledaja coasted to a win in a 6-2, 6-1 drumming of UNT’s Megan Schmulbach. Arkansas continued to roll towards a singles sweep as Vlatka Jovanovic, Maryori Franco, Audrey Bordeleau and Iliana Pacheco captured victories within minutes of each other. Freshman Yawna Allen completed the singles shutout on court five with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) win over the Mean Green’s Ashley Sammis.
“North Texas was a little weaker than I expected,” said head coach Michael Hegarty. “However, our girls did an excellent job taking care of business.”
In doubles, freshman Allison Linden saw her first action in a dual match on court two paired with Jovanovic. Together, the Arkansas tandem cruised to a win, 8-3 over Kelly Royer and Holly Lee.
“Since the singles went so quickly, we rested some folks in doubles,” Hegarty said. “It was great to see Allie play so strongly at No. 2 doubles.”
