Lewis wins; Lady'Backs second
Jump to agate FAYETTEVILLE — The University of Arkansas put together five great scores in a back-and-forth battle with Missouri for the title at the Central District Invitational in Parrish, Fla., Tuesday. Arkansas was paced by freshman Stacy Lewis and junior Amanda McCurdy throughout the tournament with Lewis tying for the top spot. McCurdy went low for the Lady’Backs Tuesday with a one-under 71 finishing third overall as Arkansas finished second behind the Tigers. Missouri won the event with a two-day, three-round 879 followed by the Lady’Backs 881. "We were in really good position to win the tournament and weren’t able to close the door," said Arkansas head coach Kelley Hester. "I think it’s a great learning experience for the team and hopefully when we’re in that position again we’ll be able to finish it up." Arkansas and Missouri both finished with a final round 292 as the Tigers hung on to a three-stroke lead from the previous two rounds on Monday. The Lady’Backs stayed ahead of Baylor and LSU finishing 11 strokes ahead of the nearest competitor. Lewis (72-70-74) tied Michigan’s Amy Schumucker (74-72-70) with rounds of 216 as both earned medalist honors. McCurdy finished at 217 (71-75-71) good for third place. Lewis and McCurdy were solid the entire tournament but other Lady’Backs stepped up in the final round. Junior Sarah Trew turned in an eight-over 80 in the first round but finished plus-one Tuesday. Senior Gena Johnson and junior Courtney Mahon both improved their scores as well both at plus two on the day. Johnson, a Hot Springs, Ark., native, finished tied for 16th overall with a 224 (75-75-74). Mahon finished tied for 19th overall with a 225 (78-73-74) followed by Trew who tied for 30th with a 229 (80-76-73). "I’m really proud of the team and I think we played really well today," said Hester.
