Perico, Oliva Pinto In Top 10 After Rd. 1 at U.S. Amateur
BANDON, Ore. – Julian Perico and Segundo Oliva Pinto are each among the top 10 after the first round of 2020 USGA U.S. Amateur Championship at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. The second round will be contested Tuesday with the top 64 golfers advancing to match play on Wednesday.
Perico carded seven birdies, which tied for third-best in the field of 264 golfers, and finished with a 4-under-par round of 67 to tie for fifth. Oliva Pinto was one stroke behind Perico, firing 3-under-par 68 to tie for seventh.
Perico sat atop the leaderboard early after birdies on holes 3 and 7 to sit at 2-under. He would also birdie holes 9 and 10. After dropping shots on each of the next two holes, Perico rallied to birdie holes 13, 15 and 16 to get to 4-under for the day. He closed his round with a par on 17 and bogey on 18 for his 67.
“I struck my irons unbelievable today,” Perico said. “I hit 17 greens. I don’t even know how many birdies I had (seven). I think four of them were inside 10 feet, so I was hitting the ball really good.”
Oliva Pinto, like Perico, was 3-under on the outward nine thanks to birdies n holes 3, 8 and 9. His lone setback was a double bogey on the par-4, 11th hole. However, Oliva Pinto carded birdies on holes15 and 16 before finishing with a pair of pars for his 68.
Both Perico and Oliva Pinto played the Brandon Trails course, a 6,883-yard, par 71 layout.
Also playing the 120th U.S. Amateur are Razorbacks William Buhl and Mason Overstreet. Buhl, playing the 7,218-yard, par 72 course Brandon Dunes Course, turned in a 3-over-par 75 while Overstreet, playing Brandon Trails, is +10.
