Q&A with a Razorback: David Lingmerth

By Tyler BjornsonArkansas Media RelationsThere are numerous ups and downs that go along with any sport season, but to get to the pinnacle of your sport it takes unsung heroes and in the Arkansas golf team’s case in 2008-09, that was David Lingmerth. As a junior, Lingmerth enjoyed his best season as a Razorback earning Second-Team All-Southeastern Conference, PING All-Central Regiona and Honorable Mention All-America honors. He had five top 10 finishes last season including ties for fifth at both the SEC and NCAA South Central Regional.The Tranas, Sweden, native is majoring in business at Arkansas and his father, Goren, was a kicker for the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League.MR: What is something about your sport that people may not necessarily know?DL: Players hit the ball longer and longer due to better equipment andmore focus on physical strength. The winner however always has andalways will be the player with the best short game.MR: What makes your sport so exciting?DL: Everybody can compete against everyone. Just look at Tom Watson in this year’s British Open. He lost in a playoff at the age of 56. Inthe first two rounds of the same tournament he was grouped with anItalian kid at the age of 16.MR: If you could play any other sport what would it be?DL: Ice hockey!!! I started playing it when I was 2 and a half, andquit right before I decided to put my focus on golf starting highschool. I Love it!MR: How important is it to give back to the community and what do youplan to do to give back?DL: Golf has given me so much. I have been to places I couldn’t evendream about as a kid because of golf. I would like to give back to thecommunity by encouraging young kids to try golf, and make it easilyaccessible for them to play.MR: What is your major and what do you plan to do after graduation?DL: I am majoring in marketing. I plan to turn pro after graduating andmake a living playing golf. However, I believe a good education issomething that I can fall back on no matter how golf goes, so I’mmaking sure that I finish school here.MR: If someone made a movie about your life who would you want to play you?DL: [laughing] . . . I don’t know. Maybe Brad Pitt or Johnny Depp.MR: Aside from golf and going to class what do you do?DL: I enjoy working out, hanging out with my friends, and watchingsports or movies on TV.MR: Who is your dream girl?DL: My unbelievable girlfriend of course!MR: What TV show can you not miss?DL: I do not have any shows that I need to follow. I just like ESPN!!MR: If you had three wishes what would they be?DL: Winning the U.S. Masters and the Ryder Cup, beating Texas A&M in the final at Nationals this upcoming season and have my own islandsomewhere in the Caribbean.MR: Where’s the coolest place you’ve ever traveled? Who did you go with?DL: Hawai’i, with the Razorback golf team in 2008 and 2009.MR: What is your lucky number and why? DL: Nine, the number I had when I played hockey; It worked really well for me.
